disclaimer, this is the rare experience for me and I genuinely really enjoy my trips and guys I fly with. But there are those times like above when all the enjoyment of the job comes to a halt when your fellow pilot just hates life.
Amen.

And you know what else is a bore? The petty, cliquish mentality that berates fresh or different viewpoints and derails so many of these threads into chest pounding contests. 🥱

Took a Break for Mothers day / Mom Day / Mutter Tag!

Um.. what?!
You resigned. You stated you had resigned, handed in your IPad and Vest?
And now, somehow.. you're bidding for a E-SRL?!
WTF

When I read the teacher’s post I read it from the perspective of someone who was offering some analysis to add to the guesses no doubt we’ve all been making as of late and I just said “Ah, cool, but no one knows and his guess was as good as mine or anyone else’s” and moved on.

You might be angry and still in a bit of denial over what’s going on. Maybe not. You also may be supremely confident in your personal assessment of the future of the world, airline industry, United, and your BES. Your “join date” in all of this has little, if anything, to do with any of that.
Couple of things.. this is the FIRST I'm hearing of the death of any United Pilot in the month of March, April and now May.
2nd, I reserve the right of 'kindness' to those I feel deserve it, to include people I don't even know but are trying to do the right thing or have had some bad luck.
Anyone who creates an account name and then tells a sob story but then comes on and states "My teams did an analysis" and we will need 4000 pilots less in 2022 is stirring the pot and pushing Doom & Gloom.
Bad enough that the company some how hatched up this new E-SRL plan to 'help' junior pilots.. yeah, right.
Bad enough x2 that the union is pushing it!
Then, on top of that we have a MBA Math teacher who is now leaving his part time job to be a full time teacher while at the same time 'worried about his teaching job', but touting 9500 pilots in 18 months. LOL

Am I angry? hmm.. not gonna lie. It's a bit anger, also frustration and some shock.
Anger that so many pilots are giving up. Posting their 'last picture flying the 756'? WTF?!
Angry that somehow, my union decided to change whats in the contract. We have specific language. 50he SRL. Stop right there.
Frustrated that some of my fellow pilots can't see that this is SK being SK. He's a known gambler. And I believe he doesn't have much love or respect for pilots. Yet somehow only we (United) come out with a massive 4600 pilot displacement bid (that has already been reduced!) yet no early out program!? Does that make ANY sense?!
And lastly I'm shocked that we as a Nation have destroyed our economy and created an even greater divide between peoples over what is a serious virus (I know.. I had it and have friends who had it) but should have been managed better. My Opinion.

And YES.. your 'join date' matters. Difference between knowing who the source is (even anonymously) based on a track record and some yahoo who joined this month but decides.. yeah, pandemic.. airline industry is a nose dive.. let me get on here and write a few posts..

Always interesting when someone 'new' spouts something and then gets called out on it.
So now.. it's not United Pilots, but other airlines.
Possible, of course. How would we know? unknown. Relevant to our thread. NOPE.

If his numbers are close, I will buy him that bottle. Till then, I believe his post of 9500 pilots is directed to scare the bottom 3000 pilots at United.
As others have already pointed out. It's about 'Active Pilots'. On the latest Vacancy Min/Max it shows 11438 as active pilots. We have around 13500... the difference is due to LTD, management and instructor pilots and who knows what else.
But what I found 'interesting' is that the Retirement Column shows 6/30. If this is the planned pilot required for the fall, why doesn't it have the retirements between now and then?
What about the retirements between now and his magical 9500 pilots?

I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt when he first posted. But I also pay attention to any message from a 'new' member.
Then his story started going off the rails. And it continues. Resigned but now putting in for E-SRL?!
Come on.

Who peed in your Wheaties today, man?
No one did STB.. but look at the track history of his 'messages' and then he posts that we will need 9500 pilots in a few years?
That is fear mongering at best.
And now somehow he's bidding a E-SRL AFTER he resigned?
I get that coincidences happen. But he posts 9500 pilots and we get an E-SRL offer that targets the bottom of our list?
Am I the only one looking at this and wondering if the company just made a play to turn the bottom 1000-2000 pilots into narrowbody seasonal workers?!

No One ****ed in my Wheaties today! More of a Capt Crunch kind of guy (Not, actually.. but it's a good fodder line for some of my un-fans to slam me with!)

Stay Well~
And... even though we don't always agree.. you have been here long enough to know where I'm coming from and that my intentions are good. Someone who has been here since May 2013 holds more weight than someone who has been here since May 2020. My opinion.

*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+

Someone posted a while back that if I didn't like the message, I didn't have to read it or post about it. True. Same goes to some of you reading my replies.

I will ALWAYS take issue with those spouting Doom & Gloom. I get that people will NEVER all see eye to eye.. but when you have an anonymous message board like this one is (hell, only a dozen of us are really identifiable.. myself included! lol) and new people sign up and seem to be directing a message at a certain subset of the pilot group, I will respond. Till I get banned~

I am truly sorry for the bottom 1000-3000 pilots who are currently in this displacement/ESRL/possible furlough/non qual mess.
It sucks.
And almost all of us have been there before, know what you're going through and many of us will do what we can to help.
But I find it kind of funny how just 2 weeks ago there was no relief in sight.. zero bookings, not looking good.
2 weeks later, we have an amended displacement bid (lowered), Lufty is re-instating flight, the world is SLOWLY coming back.
Overnight.. nope.. but slowly.

Back to the Thread Topic.
8 May CRU was a step in the right direction.
Hopefully (I expect it will..), the next one is a tiny bit better.

Stay Strong.. Stay Healthy and Stay Well, you and your Families.
We WILL Get through this~

Ain’t that the truth! I haven’t flown since mid March and really missing me some silent flight decks and Hindu meals that are still partially frozen even with 25 minutes in the oven! I yearn for those issues being relevant again.

Mr. Lahey,

I’m worried you’re back on the liquor again. After that day you had 49 drinks... This “Bo-bandy” stuff has us all worried.

I miss the 18 hour layovers with you in SFO hitting fisherman’s wharf for pier beers and strolling over to The Saloon for cash only PBR tall boys and some blues and finishing it off with a nightcap of rye at the Stinking Rose.

I’m headed out on ESRL. See you greasy ma-fukas on the bling blowwww in Novembowww 🍔

Not to be "jaded or cynical" about this job, but nothing beats the excitement and fulfillment of that "Center Autopilot in Command" callout...

We chose a volatile career that has its highs and lows. Emotions are clearly high right now as our industry flight path vector is dipping lower.

The company has said this displacement is supporting a 30% reduction as they presently forecast that to be a best case summer 2021. Math Teacher's 9,500 number happens to be closer to that percentage than any of us want to admit or even think about. As pilots we seek out information to help make us make sound decisions, and that reason is why most of us participate on this forum. Math Teacher's post provided some detailed information to consider. While I hope those models end up being way off, IMHO preparing for the threat that forecast points to is certainly warranted.

We control of the aircraft we fly, and as we work our way up the seniority list we gain more control of our schedules and quality of life. In sharp contrast, we are not in control of the airline we fly for or the airline industry.

Downturns are a painful reminder of the uncertainty and limited control that are part of our profession.

Math Teacher decided to remove volatility and take some control back by getting off this rollercoaster. Instead of wishing MT well, we insult this fellow aviation professional who after many years has had enough. Teaching can be stressful too; it has its own highs and lows. That being said, teachers are listed by many as life long role models, and will be the ones helping shape the future we will live in.

For all of us sticking with the airline pilot profession, time to be ready for another upset recovery.
