They “furloughed” guys who hadn’t even hit the line yet, and downgraded about 100 people. We are about to displace about 4600 people, which is a prelude to furloughs that will FAR exceed the number of pilots on XJT’s entire list.

I have to admit, I’ve been reading these posts for a while, but have never commented on anything. My husband is a 737 FO in ORD. Around 4,000 seniority. I was hoping for the best, but after the displacement announcement today, I just opened up a bottle of wine and cried. We have two kids to think of, and I’m currently a SAHM. I have a RN license but haven’t worked in 4 years, so I’m a bit rusty, but at least we have that to fall back on. We have about a year’s worth of living expenses in savings, but I’m worried that won’t be enough to get us by for the duration of the furlough, and I really don’t want to deplete our savings account. I’m already talking to my husband about selling the house and downsizing, pulling our kids out of sports, etc., but he says I’m overreacting, and he doesn’t want to traumatize our kids. He doesn’t think all of these furloughs will happen at once. I’m praying for all of you, and I hope we all make it through this horrific time. Stay healthy and safe.
For someone that’s never been furloughed it can be a scary and depressing time but take it from someone that has been furloughed before for 2 years, there is hope. First of all depending how much you made you can still expect to get a very generous unemployment check, that will last at least a year to 18 months. This should be adequate to cover basic expenses. There’s positives too like you’ll be home more with family and get to explore other job opportunities. At the very least you will always know you have a seat to come back to when the furlough is over.

Theres loopholes to the 0 furlough language too. Some that have accepted the care money have furloughed as well like XJT.

your prediction still isn’t correct.
no one knows what the final numbers are for each base and seat. There are so many VERY senior pilots displacing in this bid do to very senior category closings. The company may accept displacements into some catagories and not downsize them again on the next bid. This bid does NOT represent a reasonable furlough number.....at least not yet.
but make sure you gloat again her after displacement bid 3

Nobody should be on here gloating about being right but you guys have brought it on yourselves to a large extent. A number of you have been in total denial for weeks now and whenever more senior people, who've actually lived through this before, tried to open your eyes to what you were obviously shutting out, you didn't just disagree, you were downright nasty about it. There's nothing more appealing than a junior guy who already knows everything and can't be told anything. You reap what you sow.

there is nothing more exhausting than a no it all ****ed off crusty senior guy who can’t stop preaching. If you choose to be doom and gloom go for, I choose to be positive. I don’t claim to know it all I try to post what is quantifiable. Sometimes I hit the nail.....sometimes I hit my thumb.....but that’s life.

Nothing is as bleak as it looks initially, and rarely as good as it appears at first. As a furlough survivor (along with many many others) use this time to prepare for a possible change of job for a bit. It is always a great idea to consider other career options. A capable pilot should be able to find a job locally. I had friends who just barely held on (and missed furloughs in 2001) and their experience wasn't quite what they wanted/expected for a few years. Quite honestly, being furloughed quickly back then helped me come to terms with the situation and prepare a plan B. I was actually home more, made comparable money after my contemporaries took payouts and downgrades, and was home a whole lot more than those who bounced around the bottom of the list.
My wife was a SAHM and we made do, in fact, it helped us set up a long term plan that would have worked without ever returning. Keep positive, focus on what you can do and try not to worry about stuff that is largely out of your control.
