Just using vacation pay as an example. Heres the number for a two week vacation
14 x 3.25 = 45.5 hours.
14 x 5 = 70 hours
Ever notice how vacation is hardly worth crap anymore? That’s why you don’t give chit away.

I think the apprehension that many feel around this, would be tantamount to us just taking away guarantee altogether and allowing the company to determine how they staffed. that would obviously then lead to some bad outcomes for us because that could create misaligned incentives. If we simply drew a new floor at 55 hours, and said “do with it what you will,” we would not have to listen to their rhetoric and it would undoubtedly change staffing and going forward
The apprehension is that you have a very naive view on how your suggestion will work. People have tried to explain it to you, but you don’t appear to have enough real world experience to understand.

Let’s not forget that the company’s displacement just cut pilot payroll about $20 mil/month despite the fed paying.
Already getting a 40% haircut in July, no interest in hitting the street with even less money in the bank from reduced hours.

aside from the seasonal labor model, which I just don’t think applies to Modern airline economics, tell me what I don’t understand

Buddy, people have been trying to do that the last couple of pages. Most of what was written is a lot more eloquent than what I could ever write. I really don’t know what I could add. I honestly don’t know what else can be written to help you understand that the MPG is not just “an arbitrary number.” Please reread the last couple of pages and let it sink in.

human nature.....that’s what you don’t understand. Most of those who are “safe” from furlough aren’t gonna do chit to help somebody else....especially if they’ve been through bad times themselves.....and that’s mostly everyone who is “safe” from this furlough. Accept it, it’s not going to change.

Personally, I'd rather see hard caps on pay where one doesn't make over 80 hrs/mo. Any extra hours can go 100% into a furlough fund. Of course pilots would have the right to refuse any flying above, say, 75 hrs/mo.
And I guarantee that the company will want to get rid of any caps once things improve.

Would there be any opposition to making it voluntary?
month by month people can bid for a line worth 55 hours. Reserves are only on the hook for 14 days vs 18, maybe SC/FSB capped at 5 a month. Line holders can’t be awarded more than 60 hours, but if they come in at 52, they get 3 hours of soft time. Add in PS commutes or some other incentive. I’d take it. If you don’t believe in the math that might save jobs, fly your 70 hour line.
And it’s all voluntary, AND your time at work pays the same, therefore not a concession.
