Of course they are going to the private markets...they made a stock offering just like UAL.

This is assuming a rapid vaccine is developed. This virus could be with us for a very very long time which will drastically change our way of life.

They don’t even need a vaccine developed rapidly by January for instance. Even if domestic travel returns some sense of normalcy by the end of 2021, SWA is still in a good spot....not without some heartburn along the way of course. They have over a year of liquidity if passenger demand remains at zero, which we all know won’t happen. The original question I was answering was, will Southwest declare bankruptcy...I just don’t see it.

Besides the fact that SWA did take the government grants and also raised money in the private markets you otherwise nailed it.

But yes, when the world ends there will still be cockroaches and SWA.

Any EXTRA money I said. On top of what they’ve already received.

Uh, they have raised SEVERAL BILLION in the private markets since Covid started.

Or is that not extra money?

(Hint: SWA did NOT have $15B cash at the start of all of this.)

Yeah I got that. I’m just saying they have a lot of liquidity in their war chest to fight this battle with a lower cash burn rate then their peers. They have over 15B in the bank today without taking any further money. I’ll use the word “further” instead of “extra“ this time since it’s bothering you for some reason. Anyway good luck to you.

You can never have too much money.

SWA is a scary competitor to watch in this environment.

Got recall notice in Jan 2007

I did not accept because I had been at Aloha for 4 years at that time, and half way up the FO seniority list and we were doing good at the time. In hindsight, even if I did accept, i would have been furloughed again in 2009.....

Back then the recall rules were different. They would go down the list from the top, you could bypass once. when they hit the bottom they go up the list from the bottom. when they hit you again if you did not accept they removed you from the seniority list. ( people on Mil LOA were exempt)

Unless we see a rapid and full recovery, the airlines are just going to be smaller for a while and there is nothing we can do except make sure that the contract is followed.
Agreed. It’s about cutting costs quickly to buy the company time. International will not recover as quickly as domestic, and it makes no sense to pay WB pilots and NB captains to sit idle. The reason for this bump is to lower the monthly guaranteed pay of as many pilots as possible while no work exists. One could even argue it is management’s version of trying to mitigate furloughs by saving cash now to keep more pilots on the payroll (in a NB FO pool) in hopes that demand will recover. Yes, management will manipulate the process; this is why we must defend our contract vigorously.
