Default Displacement Training Sequence

Half wing here.

Doesn't the UPA state that all displacement training must be conducted in reverse seniority? If true, then how many rounds of pilots will be trained just to be furloughed before they start training guys who might actually ever fly the aircraft? Can they do several rounds of displacements before starting any training?

For example, multiple rounds of bumps until you eventually get 4000 surplus Guppy and Bus FOs on the books, none of whom have even started training yet. Then furlough pilots in the same quantity as can be trained each month. Do I have this right? Speaking as someone 500 from the bottom and actively looking for a place to start my third career in October.

Thanks!

Look at section 7-I. If a pilot has received a furlough notice they’re exempt from the provisions of section 8-E. Furlough notices have to be at least 30 days, but not more than 120. They can issue a big furlough notice June 3rd (120 days prior to October 1st and avoid having to train a bunch of people. This bid closes May 22, with an effective date of June 30. Those who they are going to furlough won’t affect training at all.

Any good advice or point of contact in retaining seniority and leaving early?

CPOs coordinate the LOAs... I’d talk to your ALPA rep before this conversation so your totally informed.

Aha ok. So the implied message is that furlough messages are likely on 1 June then? I suppose that’s good. At this point I’d rather have it in writing so I can get on with my life.

Thanks

Just remember no matter what airplane : gear up , gear down , Flaps down , Flaps up , Turn left , turn right , pitch up , pitch down . Lol . Hey at least no NDB approaches or DME arcs like the old days . And if they want to know a particular about a system , tell em’ its the FE’s job 😂

They pick when to put out the notice. They can put out the notice any time after June 3, and avoid training anyone with a furlough date of October 1. After October 1, they only have to give 30 days notice. If they give notice at the earliest possible time, they will have 3.5 months to train a bunch of NB pilots. Depending on demand, they may be able to chop a bunch on the first, and just keep training the survivors until they catch up. I’m really hoping that demand comes back to a level that greatly reduces all of this, but outside of making sure that the company follows the contract, there is nothing we can do about it. Also, as has been mentioned by others, a displacement of X, doesn’t mean they will also furlough that many. Many analysts believe that international flying will be the last to recover. Shifting unused widebody pilots to narrowbody while max deliveries come in could result in much lower numbers if demand is recovering. If demand doesn’t recover they could furlough even more in subsequent rounds. Not trying to be a jerk, but since you said that you’re a half winger, I’d plan on a certain furlough around October.

Yes, talk to your ALPA reps. In particular, we need something in agreed upon in SFO. Don't trust the SFO CP. He is not a pilots friend, don't take his word on anything.

I was taught during probation to get a six month zero income emergency fund. Preferable 18 months.

you'd think this is some solid Ivy League-phi betta kappa- six sigma advice that everyone else had who all knew the secret handshake.....

it’s managements job to prepare for tough times.

barney purple uniforms...that’s what we deserve. Ten bucks says they show up with that silliness the same day furlough letters go out.

Your darn right.

no quarter. Nothing gets waived. May and must.... what’s the difference? Will and shall?

we gotta fight for every single comma in that contract. It’s nothing personal, just business.

the stronger our enforcement the sooner the furloughs are back and the more leverage the union has in the next contract.
