I guess so. I see United as just a business and that the management is doing what they have to do to prevent bleeding out. You seem to think that they should continue to bleed so that currently unneeded labor avoids an extremely unpleasant reality of the situation due to a sense of family. United is just a business in an industry with decimated demand, not a jobs program. I’ll agree to disagree here. Good luck to you and your family as this drags on.

I’ve been hearing core 4 and similar slogans for the last 25 years and nothing ever changes. The new employees believe in it until they find out through experience that it’s all just empty campaign rhetoric. It’s only more than a business to us because we personally depend on the company, to the rest of the world, it’s just a business.

They have already determined a number they are going to furlough regardless of what the union or anyone except the government does. If they get more money from the government, then the furlough can is just kicked down the road a few more months. Maybe that would be long enough for demand to come back, but maybe not, depends on who wins the presidential election.

I’m pretty upset about the situation, and I’m disappointed in certain segments of our group and how they’re mobilizing to insulate themselves from even the MENTION of furlough mitigation.......but suggesting that UAL sells assets to protect labor is way too extreme. I’ve accepted the furlough, and have lost all belief in “unity”......but I want the company to survive so we can all come back to something good. UAL isn’t a family, it’s a business. I don’t expect mitigation, but a vote would be nice. I certainly appreciate the furlough fund. That will make a huge difference in my life.

That’s a pretty big assumption.

Scott Kirby has made it abundantly clear that “he” will do whatever it takes to make sure United survives. That is what managers do. They manage assets.
We need a leader, not a manager.
Some of you are fine being managed as if you were simply an asset. I think it’s terrible.
If my wife and I “managed” our family like this, then we would sacrifice their safety and well being to keep the things we’ve acquired. Instead we choose to do what’s necessary to keep our family together. If that meant we needed to sell the house, work two jobs, etc... then that is what we would do.
Sell assets, take union suggestions. Show the people that United will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and well being of it’s people over “ensuring United’s survival”. Maybe then we would have a culture of “people” that would do what it takes... not a manager.

look I may get furloughed I’m right on the edge. Every single freind I ever made in College and the regionals who were hired at United are getting furlough letters. I feel terrible for all affected. But don’t try to make this more than it is. It makes no sense that people are taking this personally. You can’t call United a “family” it’s to big. A family is the 5 pilot 4 airplane cargo company we worked for 20 years ago.
mitigation would be great but unless we are cash neutral every month then nothing will stop the company from getting rid of those they don’t need.

sell assets to keep people they don’t need employed? That’s would be a new kind of dumb.

Internet bravado at its finest. I don’t understand why you would be so brash?
It’s amazing how heartless this “business” can make people.

No furloughs!
Their CEO's look at leaves as an investment in their corporation.(which is smart).
If Kirby is smart he will do the same.
There are very few things in aviation more expensive than a disgruntled, ****ed off pilot.
One week operating loss for 20-30 years of goodwill seems like a good investment to me.
