A lot of this comes down to how nimble and competitive Kirby wants to be. One argument would be slice and dice down to the minimum required, maybe 5000 as nopac says. They could make that work. But IF there are glimmers of increased demand for spring/summer ‘21 (which could come at far shorter notice than the typical advance bookings) is he going to want to get caught flat-footed without being able to flex up quickly? You will ALWAYS find SWA waiting in the wings with the staff and aircraft to grab market share, especially considering they are going to want to keep what could be their first-ever pilot furlough to an absolute minimum. Almost a decade later we are still fighting to hold/regain what we lost to them in Denver during the Smisek era.

instructors left

320 - 26 and that includes full time evaluators that can only teach LDRQ/LOE
737 - 7 including full time evaluators
756 - 11 including full time evaluators
777 - 28 including full time evaluators
787 - 10 including full time evaluators

so 82 instructors total in the entire building. Not to mention the loss of nearly every single pilot position in management (FTMs) and SME roles.

but don’t worry training need not be considered.

They will just train new instructors to replace those who get furloughed. It’s been done before.

they would have to post a job opening/interview/hire. Then if they are qualified on the jet it will take 30-45 days to get them qualified to teach only the procedures phase and manuvers phase. Then they will learn how to teach the CQT and CQTL then 6 months later (at a minimum) they will learn how to teach the LOFTS/LDRQ/QMV/CQMV. Then they will receive their FAA check out which must be done by the APM.

so yeah it’s a peice of cake......

if they are not current on the aircraft they need a full Qual course, full IOE, then must consolidate then they do everything listed above. Were talkin almost a year before they can conduct validations and teach LOFTS.

With SWA being a single fleet type, if UAL/DAL/AA furlough, I don’t see how SWA could NOT furlough. Matter of fact, SWA is probably the easiest airline to furlough, from a logistical and financial standpoint.

who’s going to want to do the job? All those people can already do it if they want and they aren’t doing it. PIs work an awful lot more days than line pilots, and driving to and from TK each and every day is fine if you live within 10 miles. Otherwise it can be a long back and forth commute. Is someone going to commute to TK for a pay cut, or move their families? Probably not.

I meant cut 5000 and leave 8000 or so active. Are those numbers based on 8000-ish active?

no the numbers for 8000 active are much better and probably manageable. The numbers below would be how many PIs get furloughed.

Also keep in mind that our seniority numbers are a year out of date.
320 - 14
737- 98 almost 3/4s
756- 33 About half
777- 23
787- 25 a little less than half

the 737 would be decimated if they cut 5000 on oct 1st.
