not to dig too deeply in, but when the gov't says for example "for national security/safety, all airlines must temporarily cease international operations", the gov't is essentially eliminating the entire business model for some airlines. If "the gov't" sees an end to the virus at some point and doesn't want to rebuild the ability of Americans to conduct business around the globe, it's in the gov't's interest to perhaps help see those airlines through the decision they imposed...

Or we could go full pure libertarian, shut down all assistance monies (health care etc) to all parties and let it all burn to the ground and we can all bootstrap ourselves back to something resembling this current economy in 20 years or so...

United and the other airlines would be foolish not to take that deal.

Not to mention the government treats airlines like an ATM with taxes and fees when times are good.
