I don’t know for sure (as I am not one) but I doubt it as that’s pretty much the reason why you would cancel a class 3 days before hand, so you don’t have an obligation.

No. You actually have to become an employee before getting a seniority number. I haven't heard directly from any of the affected pilots, but I assume they got some assurance that they will still be the next pilots hired? If so, their relative seniority position will be the same as it would've been had they started as planned.

Would be far worse to get furloughed in 9 months on probation with lots of other pilots into the potential glut of pilots looking for jobs... assuming worse case scenario.
Thank you for pointing this out to the SNOW FLAKES that think they'll never see a road bump in their carrier! All this has happen before. When it goes bad at the big airlines it gets BAD. Ask the AA guys that were on the streets for 10 years!

And the reality is, although those pilots now exist at every legacy, there could be those in this class who did face challenges during the lost decade. Now they're facing that again. Not everyone getting hired needs a lesson.

For those of you that think this deal will blow over soon, we all hope you are correct.

The Harvard folks are less optimistic...

It would be prudent to get control of the STAFFING FORMULA. If the line pilots and the union have anything to stand on it's control over the staffing as a way to force compliance. That's gotta get into the contract. Not possible to cancel classes, or short staff bases if the union has a way to enforce staffing numbers. That's the actual real-deal no kidding answer to this, and a few other staffing related problems. Currently no minimum reserve compliment. No mandatory PBS staffing. Everything is floating. the G line floats. It all floats. The pilots are treated as economic widgets and migratory farm workers simultaneously. Seriously. Fix that, and you fix allot of stuff. Anyone want to tell ALPA if you fail to deliver we won't sign it? You can avoid stuff like this with simple contract enforcement. Put it in the contract and then enforce it. Changes the entire dynamic of PBS, vacancy bidding, and vacation bidding.

Since we’re apparently painting with a broad brush, let’s assume the SNOW FLAKES who you have such little compassion for are those 23 pilots so unceremoniously not even shown the door, but had it slammed in their faces after having been welcomed in. If recent history has been any guide, their average age was probably 42ish, probably evenly split between mil and civ, and probably with resumes and experience that would humble all of us.

So these are men and women who have spent a couple decades dragging their families around in support of their careers, going to war and/or being bent over the barrel of regional flying, finally getting the brass ring of the United job offer and presumably doing the ethical thing we are all expected to do from our employers by providing two weeks notice, something United Airlines would undoubtedly expect of their own employees should they choose to leave for any reason.

Now, of all the parties involved, you choose to place blame on them? These are people with young families who walked away from a $100,000 paycheck and medical insurance because of a commitment that was made to them. Three days prior they found out that promise was a lie. You now deride them as SNOW FLAKES?
