Commuting to reserve in any capacity is not recommended under our current contract - particularly on a global fleet (757, 767, 777, 787). It will be many years until you can hold a line as many are waiting until they can hold a line or 60% or higher until they take a bid. Reserve and living in base is an entirely different story.

'noon everybody,
Had a question about QOL as FO on a WB based in SFO. About how long would it take a new hire to get WB FO at SFO? And also how many days off/working per month could you expect? This would be a two leg commute for me. Are most of the trips out and back or back to back from base? Only East Asia or Europe flying too? Any info on the position is humbly appreciated!

Move to make it a 1 leg commute or come up with a different plan.

Thanks to everyone who has put an answer in - good, bad and ugly!
As to a couple questions asked:
1). Am not at United currently
2). Commuting from AK and Boise
Sorry, I'm new to the United thread. What are SCs (schedule changes?) and APUs? I have WB time and interested in the long term, next 25 years-ish. How many days ON is a line-holding WB FO at say SFO?

That was the case when things were booming. I’m starting to think the days are over of 3 year upgrades and new hires on the WB’s. I’m not saying the sky is falling but realistically things aren’t looking real nice at the moment where majority of our SFO WB’s deploy to.

I saw similar predictions after the dr dao incident. He wasn't even a speed bump. (insert joke here)
BOI is one leg on an RJ. ANC has to go through SEA..

Correct, the layover can count, however most WB reserves who don't try to APU generally sit around doing SCs or the rare domestic equipment sub or ferry. Your example is a very rare occurrence and like I said never once had my days off rolled. I purposefully bid 3 x 6 day blocks though as a protection against that. That will give me an hdo on 1 which will force them to call someone else for the assignment, and for the other 2 blocks we're talking like a 1% chance of rolling if the stars align. I talk to people all the time who haven't bid up because they won't sit reserve out of fear of days off rolled. It's so overblown and they've been given bad info from people who don't quite understand the details.
It would be nice if we had something similar to delta in that you can have 1x15 day block for example. I'm a fan of long blocks of time off instead of the 3/3/6.

So basically you bid your whole schedule around preventing getting a Tuesday-Wednesday off in middle of month rolled? Must be nice. Most of us have things going on in our lives requiring specific HDO and if necessary RDO placement. That goes out the window fast if you are only bidding 6 day blocks. I guess that’s just bad info though.
If one's personal schedule is so important to them, then they maintain their seniority on smaller equipment or stay right seat vs left. The guys that bid up and then complain they don't get Xmas and all the other days off they want are ridiculous.

Dr Dao predictions? I’m sorry, that isn’t even in the same ballpark as this Andy. Dao was a PR nightmare for us, but he didn’t result in massive flight suspensions to Asia, empty wide bodies to the rest of Asia, additional COLA’s, 50 hour stay at home lines for WB FO’s and yearly guidance plan being pulled all while the global markets plummet. Central bank to the rescue I guess!
