Something along these lines was going to be my next post. Airlines cycle up and down, when and how deep is anyone’s guess. Supporting a family with a stable job is not something to take lightly.
Starting over at the bottom of the list, commuting, reserve, not being home for weekends or holidays, no summer vacations for the foreseeable future, possible furloughs, etc etc.
This career has some serious downsides to consider too. Especially for an older established person.

To the OP,
There is so much more to airline pay then hours flown x hourly rate. For starters, a dc plan that gives you approx 16% (without you being required to contribute to get that 16%). Life insurance with options for a spousal benefit, short & long term disability, etc. Something to think about.....

I always love when people post crap like “you can make this if you bust your butt” instead of more realistic numbers. Sure there are folks who can credit 150 hours during summer months but these are most definitely the outliers, not the mainstream, the folks who work the system hard. During my 20+ years in aviation I find the vast majority of people want to do their job, fly their line and go home. The other joke is when folks throw in the DC as income when you will not see that money for possibly decades! Of course it’s a benefit, but it doesn’t affect my day to day, just my piece of mind and planning for the future because most if not all folks are still going to max out their 401k.
Bottom line, for example, for a 3-4 year NB FO to make say $225k straight pay, not counting DC, per diem, etc, just flight credit pay, implies about 1,400 hours of credit pay per year. Is that impossible, of course not. Is that the norm or even close to the average? Of course not.

Pay potential
I’m in the pool and expecting to credit near the min guarantee for the first year. Occasionally I see posts with high credit numbers of 125, 150, etc. That seems tough to pull off without sacrificing most your days off or without premium.
How likely is it to get premium trips? Do they appear often and are they typically gone in seconds? That’s been my experience at my current company.

Not likely at the bottom of the seniority list. The same top seniority pilots seem to get all of them.
