The problem with ORD is all of the construction. I think the expansion's supposed to be complete in 2021. Once that's complete, UA should grow considerably at ORD.

I'm not ORD and never will be, but I don't see ORD as being a long term seniority problem. When I got hired in 2000, ORD was the most junior domicile.
I'm pretty sure UA has major expansion plans once the construction's complete so I'd expect it to be competitive with SFO and EWR as a junior base.

(the trips get covered, and no vacancy needs to be created to do so)
The MEC and SSC disagree.

Well, in the very long term I think you are correct. I'm thinking the new runway would open in 2021 all right. I don't think they will even break ground on the new terminal buildings until that has happened. 2024 opening maybe? A lot can happen between now and then. I don't think the OP was looking quite that far out. He just wanted to know how long until he could get to ORD, and today it seems reasonably quick. Tomorrow maybe not.

It's fairly quick to get to ORD in spite of the construction. I see no reason why that would change.

Not so sure I agree with this. Out of Base occurs just prior to reserve assignment. But after APU. If the trip is not APU'd then nobody in base wants it. When the trips are finally assigned to reserves they often are not frozen, basically saying "please any line holder, take this trip, I want to stay home." Now when scheduling sees a shortage in reserves, days in advance, they build trips from other bases to cover.
I personally love Out of Base! It gives me a chance to fly trips at a base I can't even touch. If I were to get into that base, I'd be on reserve for a long time. Heck, I've even seen Hawaii trips go Out of Base (I wasn't legal ).

Gotta say, if you read the OPs original post closely, you might deduce that at best he has a CJO. If the OP can get his foot on the property within say the next six months or so I'd say he's in good shape to get to ORD quickly like you say.

More likely, he is working towards getting hired at a major and hasn't even applied yet (his profile is new and says he's a CRJ right seater). So, if he isn't on property by the time the music stops again he may be waiting for a while to get to ORD, which is what I wanted to warn him about on my first post here. Even if the economy keeps on going, I also wanted to warn him that his seniority would only improve slowly until the terminals are done. If that is okay by him great, hopefully he only actually encounters upside from that possibility (a new contract which grows mainline and throttles RJs might be just the ticket).

Long term, if he gets hired near when the new terminals are finished he should be in good shape with much better growth and seniority progression. Yes, as you like to point out, things can change.

On a side note - "zero evidence"? Wow, just wow.

Yea, pretty sweet we can grab trips our seniority wouldn't otherwise allow us to fly. And who would want a Hawaii trip to go PP/SRM when us junior guys can help the company and ourselves at the same time. Win, win.

Everyone in base has the first shot at the trip. Seniority is respected. Why shouldn't a trip be available to people junior to you (in or out of base), before it goes to premium pay? Out of base pickup is as much a contractual right as your premium pay. Heaven forbid a junior person be able to have a few scraps every now and then...

The only guys who scream about guys picking up at 50 are the senior guys who tend to always get 100 percent .

That being said , premium should only be 100 percent , this 50/75 is total BS.

Some modest relief starts next year. (hopefully)

They are already underway on adding to Terminal 5. That is supposed to be done next year. When finished (we'll see about next year???) some Terminal 2 folks are moving to Terminal 5 (Delta, and not sure who else) and those Terminal 2 gates come to UA. Getting those extra gates should help allow some expansion for us at ORD. What that will be, I have no idea, but at least there is some potential good news there.

After that, the new Island (Councourse D??) construction starts out to the West of Concourse C. Then the extension of Concourse C itself (to the South). Once those are done, then the redo of Terminal 2 starts that will make the new International terminal for UA and AA allowing our passengers the ability to clear customs in that new facility and then walk to our respective departure gates.

All of that construction is supposed to be done by 2028. If you are a gambler, I would suggest taking the "over" on that bet!!!
