That’s because a lot of the IAH leadership and attitude moved to DEN along with the sims. The guppy training here is still an embarrassment.

Having been to training on the 756 in iah the 737 in both iah and FTC den and 777 den and 787 iah. The biggest difference was in the classroom not the sims. Back then then was actual in class training ( Actually worth a crap), and shortly after the merge the cbt battle began waging. That I feel is the big difference. During the transition to the current cbt (near only training) much of the instruction was left up to the student to figure out on their own, and even now they don’t focus on the fmc as much as they should ( you will learn that on the line). They have pulled days from the syllabus and are ok with additional days if required. But the shortened schedule means things are left for ioe. I think most of the complaints come from that transition.

The biggest change that I have seen has been in the consistency. When I first went through training with CAL each instructor taught their technique as if it was in the book. When you got to the next session a new instructor would lecture you on how it should actually be done and proceed to teach his technique. The same was true of the line check airmen. A complete lack of consistency. The instructors now are interchangeable parts. Each one teaches the book and the message doesn’t change unless the book does. The culture has also gotten better. Most of the scabs have decided that TK isn’t the protected safe space that they enjoyed in IAH and have gone back to the line. It’s much easier listening to an instructor talk about core 4 and professionalism when you can actually respect the individual. The down side is that we now get to deal with them every day on the line instead of once every training cycle.

Don’t forget in the late 90s you had 3 man aircraft. 1 sim session trained 3 pilots.

Cool story...but false. Very little of any IAH in the 737 program in DTC, almost exclusively DEN boys. No more excuses...

I've heard the 756 program isn't much better.

The problem with the 756 isn’t with the instructors, it’s with the footprint. The course is made for someone already on the airplane or another Boeing. For someone coming from Airbus or new to the company it sounds like a handful. 3 versions of the 757, and 2 of the 767 self taught on your iPad, plus just 4 days of class to sort it all out. Slowing down and being more thorough would cost money and time..... so we just hit the highlights.

This simply wouldn’t be a true APC thread without some them and us thrown in. A day without them and us and the good old days is like a day without sunshine!

To be clear, I never thought the problem with the guppy program was the instructors either. I thought they were all fantastic, both IAH and DEN. They're doing the best they can with the limited time and tools at their disposal.

4 days of class on the 756, really?

The problem is treating TK as a retirement job. All PIs should be forced to fly the line more, two years at TK followed by a year back online flying or something like that. CPO personal should be included in a similar schedule.
