I just don’t get airline bravado I guess. With the exception of the scab years when airlines dipped from a tainted pool, the legacies all hired equally qualified pilots. You put your apps out everywhere and tried to nail the interview for any that called. Getting a call from one didn’t mean that you were better or worse than any other airline. At this point it just doesn’t matter. Legacy this or that is dead and gone. What we have now is a pretty healthy company that is going through a major hiring wave. We even have half wingers being awarded the 777. Times are pretty good and I’d rather enjoy the present than stew in misery over the past.

I was an aviation major at a well known aviaition university way too many years ago but looking back it seems like everybody I knew ended up somewhere commensurate with their GPA/flying skills in college. The correlation is amazing, actually.
Even with approximately a dozen "major" airlines in the US, some are in the top third of desirability and some are in the bottom third.

I understand that, but experienced pilots are interchangeable parts. United, Delta, American, Continental, Northwest, US Airways........ we’re all the same. Getting a call from United rather than Continental doesn’t mean that one is a better pilot any more than getting a call from Delta rather than United does.

What about the guy who turned down united in the 2000s to go to cal because ual was a dumpster on fire. Just stating some revisionist historical facts.

Yes and no.

I won't deny the filters of the hiring process are most likely more stringent than others, but to call yourself one of the few is just bad. As others have and will state, quite often there just aren't as many opportunities.
I think we used to call this a 9/1 personality, back in the good old CLR days (never forget it was a UAL crash which mandated CLR/CRM).

I guess this strike me as very egotistical and a hardy pat on your own back.

Okay, so getting the “call” from Delta vs Spirit right now doesn’t mean you’re a better pilot... but we all know it means something.
I don’t think anybody honestly believes that if you told your aviation buddies in ‘99 that you got a job at CAL, it would be the same reception as getting hired at UAL. And FWIW, I was a CAL intern/fanboy in the mid 2000s...
