I read once that the target VS was supposed to be approx 700-800fpm down and that it was actually twice that. Ouch.

Singular They has been around and in use for hundreds of years. It's not that big of a deal.

A United passenger should be more concerned that they have a pilot who is concentrating on the flight, not whether their use of "they" is in the singular or plural.
