Dude...8000 is a low time Captain. White, Black whatever. At 8000 in the left seat of a 737 you are green.
Especially if your right seater has 200 hours. Nobody knows what they are doing at 200 hours.

Just curious what the magic number is?

Let’s not forget that this airplane has different displays as well. So if you were thrown in a jet with different displays that you would be “familiar” with after a 1-2 hour iPad lesson and have a stick shaker going off with unreliable airspeed and other confusing indications, can you confidently say you would be immediately sure what you should do?

some 19k hour pilots wouldnt be able to and almost all (if not all) 200 hrs pilots wouldnt.

some 8000 hour pilots could do it alone

some couldnt...but I suspect if he could do it, he could do it alone *which is the same as having a 200 hour co-pilot.

imo.

but, the thing is, there really is only one way toi find out.

Well I guess I’m not upgrading anytime soon. I didn’t bid high time lines and am FAR short of the magic 8000+ hours to be experienced I guess.

Ha. So dumb. I’ve seen pilots with 20k hrs that fly as bad as a first year private pilot...and I’ve seen low time guys rock it.

You’re either a pilot or you’re not. It’s easy to identify those guys crappy ones. And if you don’t believe me...well, it’s becuse you’re one of those guys.

Your sarcasm may be warranted re: the 8,000 hour Captain comment, but none of us could disagree with the idea that someone with 200 hours has no business being at the controls of an airliner. Besides, that is just how much time the “FO” had on this last flight, and I doubt he was right off IOE. How much time was he hired with? 100? 50?

The Captain was undoubtedly single-pilot at a time when he desperately needed another.

That’s a very true statement. Not saying he was training the guy...but aren’t all IOE instructors single pilot for a majority of their time teaching. We would never get anyone trained in new aircraft if that weren’t the case.

Early on had someone tell there are pilots with 10,000 hours and then there pilots with 20 x 500 hours. Took me awhile to decipher.

No, I don't think most IOE instructors are single pilot for the majority of their time teaching.

WWII pilots only had a total time of 200-300 hours. United hired private pilots off the street years ago. Captains sometimes have to be single pilot in times of distress. That's why they are well compensated for the skills and knowledge to be the final authority.
