I'm an Aircraft Line Technician. I've only started my pursuit of becoming a United Pilot in 2017, so I've just completed ATP mins and joined ExpressJet to build my turbine time. I realized that the four year degree is a must, so I enrolled back into school and should have that completed by years end. Do you currently work for United? And if so can PM if you have anymore advice or know of anyone who's been down this road.
Thanks
Thanks
Seems like you're half way there already.
PM if you want.. I'd try reaching out to a Chief Pilot at the base you use to work at.. just to 'get some advice'. Also might try your old boss at Maintenance.
I would think that once you get through training at Express, you should be able to get an interview.
I just met another younger pilot who never upgraded to Capt at a regional, but got hired here.
Times are different. While TPIC is "usual" required, it's not a "given" that you have to have it.
Seems with your background, you should be able to get an interview sooner rather than later.
Good Luck! And like I mentioned, PM me if there's anything I can do to help.
Always

PS) Ex Ramper.. A&P.. RJ guy... USAF Enlisted!

Keep working hard and you'll be a United pilot soon enough!
Best of luck!

I mentored a ex-Mechanic that was hired last year...
He was a 10+ year mechanic with us, he went to work at ASA and never upgraded, had no degree (I encouraged him to get that finished and he did finally get a BS Degree)
He was hired last year, just got off of probation this month....great attitude and he never took "no" for an answer when a lot of people said he would never make it!
Good luck to you sir!

As others said, stick with it. I know three guys who went that route by creative bidding and swapping of their line mX scheds. All three got to majors although one quit flying professionally and went back to Mx after 2008 because he was super senior at UA and the junior pilot pay and reserve schedules sucked (he was older and didn't want to wait for things to pick up).
Nobody is going to ask a mechanic why he didn't fly in the first place Not everybody gets a mil college scholarship or comes from money. If they do ask for some reason, just turn it into a story of self-reliance and perseverance.

Rick your spot on with how someone can accomplish the transition without parting ways with the company. Since my last post I was able to interview with United Via Aviate and received a CJO thru that process. I currently use that same creative process that you spoke of about working both schedules. I just wanted others to know like you said that it is very much possible to do so. By far the biggest challenge of the transition is the financial one. It's giving up your job that you use to provide for your family to flight train and then enter a much lower paying regional pilot industry which makes someone hesitant of transition. I unfortunately lost my flying at ExpressJet during Covid and was able to get back on with CommutAir a few months later, but my job with United was always there, I still had a paycheck coming in and medical for my family. So if there are any employees out there in the process or thinking about it, feel free to PM I would love to share my story with you so you can better plan your path to the flight deck.
