So easy to armchair quarterback this one but no, I probably wouldn't have dropped into Goose and chose Gander or St Johns in lieu of it. Wasn't there and won't and shouldn't critique those on that were on the flight deck. Everyone survived and all's well.

Agree!

I agree. One of the things I have a problem with is how the company has set up the info for diversions. We have the section in the wom with limited information. They also have the airport database in ccs which you should have wifi to connect with and look up the added info, customs, hospital distance and capabilities and such. Why should we have to look in to different sections to get the information?
We used to have more of this info in one spot the regions wom section and it would be easy to do but falls on deaf ears.

We have medlink and dispatch and all but in reality the last couple times I talked to medlink it felt like they were covering their ass. Some of us still have the old cheat sheets for south america, europe asia but none of that info is really up to date. Easier access to the info we could use and need at times we would be nice especially since are communications with the company can be limited in some areas such as magadan and such. JMO

And I am sure United didn't pay them a dime for it other then per diem and whatever they blocked to get there.

Word is that Goose (and possibly Gander) will be changed to E airfields in the WOM as a result of this incident.

Maybe learning has occurred

Anybody who diverts into Goose clearly has never been to St. John’s on a Friday night. Or any night.

You mean for doing their jobs? Hero pay doesn't seem appropriate now does it?

So, do we know if the dispatcher/NOC recommended other divert alternative(s)? I hope we all learn more about this in an effort to educate the rest of us for the better going forward.

If so, I’m thinking the captain is in for a nice little chat with his CP/VP if Flt ops etc. Its one thing to make a bad call. We’ve all probably done it in one way or another. It’s a completely different thing to then encourage passengers to email the CEO and use social media to get the attention of the airline as the recovery etc isn’t up to his expectations. I hope he learned something here but I have my doubts (if in fact the 570 reference is true).

If the door had not broken, would it have been a "bad call?"

I edited my post above but to answer your question, I don’t know. I’m totally armchair quarterbacking here and I don’t like to do that. This gave us a pretty bad black eye and I’d like to know more about it as I’m sure you do as well.
