Better cancel all the new hire classes since we are properly staffed. Don’t want to spend salaries and benefits on these new guys (even though you two got yours...pull up the rope) when you can just SRM and save money to be competitive. After all the world has changed.

There's year round demand and today's public is willing to vacation at all times of year, not just summertime.
United has been lagging the industry in block hour growth for a very long time. We're flying the way airlines flew 75 years ago. The only difference is that airlines used to lay off most of their staff during off peak months.
If United wants to compete/be a leader in this industry, they need to smooth out block hours. There's more than enough demand to increase our block hours during 'off peak' times. In order to do that, we will need more pilots.

While much of this is added ski destination flying is United Express, the idea is the same. I expect to see more mainline growth happening in the off season months.

Speaking of year-to-date hiring....
“Year to date, including September, there have been 399 New Hires and 54 Furlough returns for a total of 453.
The first tranche of the remaining furloughs has begun to hit the contractual 10-year limit and 11 will have fallen off the list by the end of the month. Also, some furloughs may be missing the deadline to inform the company of their intent to return 30 days prior to any specific class date.
There are now 160 remaining extended furloughed pilots on the list with various 10 year expiration dates thru November 10th 2019.”
