Default Reserve at UAL

Hey fellas.

B6 guy here. As you may know we just got a TA. There are some questions about reserve as it works at other companies. Our MEC has been weak on details here.

How does reserve work at UAL? I'm not looking for all the gory details, but generally. Is long call the standard and then you are switched? Is there an override or limits on how much short call you can sit? Can you pick up flying or reserve on days off?

Also, can one of you guys get on hiring me?

Lots of threads on UAL reserve. Do a little searching and you'll have more info that you want.

But the basics are
1. 2 systems. Long call and short call.
2. Everyone is supposed to start on long call then if assigned, do short call for a 14 hour window
3. However, the company abuses the system, and basically assigns everyone short calls with no accountability or limits. So effectively, there is no long call. Very tough on commuters. Commuting to reserve at UAL is a nightmare.
4. You do get extra pay for more short calls but there are conditions. The company doesn't seem to care, they just want everyone on short call.
5. They frequently call, during your short call window, and give you another short call, back to back, to back, to back. Again, no limits, or accountability.
6. You cannot do reserve on days off, but with some conditions, you can move days off around. International reserve, you basically only have 6 days off you can count on, called hard days off, or HDO's. The rest are moveable at the companies discretion, with conditions. Again, they do this at their whim.
7. You cannot pickup flying on days off either, 1 exception--at the crew desk whim. You have to call the crew desk, move the day, then try to pick the trip up. It seems success is tied to how the crew desk guy feels that day or if he's had his coffee yet, phase of the moon--you get the idea.

Bottom line, lots of holes, system drastically needs improvements. But with a few small changes QOL can be vastly improved--at UAL. Hopefully it is on the list for our current contract talks.

If there is room for interpretation of the contract, or nothing defined, you can count on the company abusing the system. Good luck on interviews and hiring.

WOW! Going to UAL soon (waiting on a class). Looks like I’ll need to keep my mentor on speed dial. Does the MEC have any time set aside during new hire training to walk us thru this?

I have not had one LC since September of 2017.

A new VP of scheduling started about the same time hmmmm

Commuting to RSV as previously said at UA is a disaster.

Buyer beware.

Union reps will be present but I don't think they spend to much time in the contract. Ask one for the reserve gouge or ask your mentor for it. If neither have it go to the UALpilots forum and look up the sticky for reserve gouge. Thats all you really need.

In fact the reserve gouge may even be available on the ALPA website.

I spent 8 months commuting to RSV and now I live in base.

Commuting isn't that bad because your day one starts at noon or later (short call starts and 10 am but you can't show before noon). Last day of RSV ends at 10 am (long call) or 3 pm (short call).

Usually I would commute in day one for either a trip or a short call/field standby. Then I just sat in my crash pad. A lot. Lots of unused short calls/field standby, then I would fly home on my last day.

Living in base I only pick up flying if I like the trip or layovers. Otherwise I just wait for the phone to ring, or not. I wish shortcall/FSB was paid regardless of used/unused. I wish we had pure long call lines. I wish we had pure short call lines for more guarantee.

Depends on where you commute from, but it's not awful. Calling to move my days around has never been an issue. Might just be my experience, but I am always able to get days moved to where I need them.

Reserve on International flight is very easy. I have never had them move my days.

I understand 737/320 is different...but it seems like night/day between widebody/narrowbody reserve.
