Section 6 Opening Letters

well we all knew the scope was coming up for discussion. My money is on the mec keeping the nc on a tight path to not change anything in that department. If we let that cat out of the bag, we are bigger fools than management already thinks we are. And, we can kiss our careers goodbye. Delta and american would follow suit, which would only add fuel to the idiot in congress who thinks there's no value in preserving the better paying jobs u.s. Majors offer when compared to any foreign cabotage operation. He'd be sure to get traction on his bill when the lobbyists show statistics of all the "prosperous" regional airline jobs, and why foreign ownership wouldn't upset the established "norm" for u.s. Airline careers.

What exactly is California sick pay type rules?
I want Delta’s sick time policy. 60 hrs a year is a joke. When we are hiring new younger pilots with young kids you can call in for (3) 4 day trips a year paid if they are min pay trips narrowbody. Widebody is even worse since the trips are more efficient.

Had a MEC dude come up and chat before heading back from their last big meeting in ORD a month or two ago. At the end of a pleasant 10 min convo about how things were going I politely asked, “As a guy sitting right at the bottom 10% of the list: please don’t give up anything on scope.”
He said, for what it’s worth, that the direction given to the negotiating committee on the subject was clear: it was simply non-negotiable.

The best news during these negotiations is that the RJ contractors are currently hard pressed to find cheap labor in this market.
Best of luck going forward!

Some smart guy on the other forum posted a scenario where the company just strong arms us all the way to mediation and then scope gets trashed. I have no idea if this is a likely scenario or fantasy, but nothing, absolutely nothing will surprise me. Shortly after deregulation occurred, I thought that the whole industry would shake itself out in 5-8 years. What a lousy prognostication. I have since learned to go with the flow and not agonize over BS out of my control.
One day (LUAL) the MEC chair walked into the cockpit and proudly proclaimed that after years of BS, that we had a TA and had gotten "everything". We asked him several pointed and specific questions and the answer was always, "it's all in there". Well, needless to say, much of it wasn't and some of what was in there was warm and brown. He had bullshattaouilled us royally. The only thing this time around, and I mean the only thing that gives me hope is our new Chairman. Sadly, pilots need a strong MEC to keep them from harming themselves.
Openers are just a fairy tale / Christmas wish anyway.

I think “modify JV” and “own a foreign carrier” are more worrisome than RJs (since I think that Maginot Line will not be breached).
The griping on the DAL threads is often about International flying (and ergo, wide-bodies) being flown by other carriers....
There’s scope at both ends of the spectrum.

(Trivia: UAL has more large wide bodies (777/A350) than DAL and AA combined.)
