There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a different career. Some folks prefer cargo, others like corporate, some like the widebody flying while others prefer not to deal with jet lag or fly at night...

But when you come across all smug saying how SWA is a stepping stone and one’s career being a disappointment, my reply stands for the reasons I already mentioned. I’m one of the living proofs that living in domicile at Southwest is a very lucrative proposition, and I’d suspect the same with any major airline.

Bottom line - expressing a preference is one thing. Unfoundedly crapping on another one to make your point is another.
It IS lucrative...but tell a 25 year Legacy veteran that southwest is as prestigious....and for guys hired then, it WAS a stepping stone...probably until after 9-11. Even today it’s an apples to oranges comparison.

SWA is a great company, you can make a lot of money, but it is on a completely different plane than the legacies.

Agreed, you can make a ton of cash at SWA, but the legacy lifestyle seems to be a lot less hustle to do it. I’ve had zero captains at my new airline show me their W-2s...I think it’s because they don’t feel compelled to do it.

There is no prestige left in this industry. It’s a job. Nothing more.

Can you please define what “prestige” in this context means to you?

Amen. Anyone who thinks their gig has more “prestige” than anyone else needs to get over themselves and look in the mirror for a little bit.
The stuff that makes this job great happens when you aren’t doing it. I would trade 30 hours at my house for 30 hours in *insert European city here* but that’s just me. I go to work to make money so I can spend time at home and get my kids some of the things I wasn’t able to have growing up.
You are a cog in a soulless machine that will drop you in a hot second if it could. You are a cost on a spreadsheet.

You’re right, there’s definitely nothing prestigious about a 4 leg day on a 737 with an overnight in Midland.

I would much much rather retire having flown for United, Delta or American. Southwest just isn’t in the same league. Sorry but that’s how I see it. Southwest reminds me of a commuter airline that pays really good but has substandard work rules. Many legs a day in a narrow body 737 into my 50s and 60s doesn’t sound appealing. Could you make a career at Southwest.... sure...a really good one absolutely but if I got stuck there I would have always wished that I had made it to United, Delta or American. That’s just how I see it.

Gents,

If you are happy where you are great! However, don't rail against another company just because it doesn't work with your lifestyle.

This post started as a comparison between two carriers and has degraded into a "mine is bigger than yours" contest. If you have something constructive to add then please do, if not just pass.

Going forward remember it's bad to tell a lie, it's good to tell the truth, and sometimes it's best not to say anything at all.

Cheers,
Biff
