The Feds used to be anal about diverting to nearest etops alternate. In this case it was likely ITO. They may have some "splainin" to do but in ge end I think a non event..after the FAA is done crowing.
Had the similar issue with a GE engine on an etops divert. We landed in EWR. Faa wanted to know why we continued to EWR and passed "suitable airports".
After a couple back and forths, issue dropped.

ITO is not necessarily the closest airport if you are on a northern track...
Also, the fact that they prepped leads me to wonder if they were concerned about possible control issues caused by debris impact with the empennage.
I am going to say well done by the crew!

Too many people think an engine shutdown is the end of the world, its not. Losing an engine today is a far cry from Pan Am 6.
