I get paid to fly em', not decide who to hire.
i don’t know where the 60 or 70k apps number came from. There are 20k regionals. Some are lifers and some are not yet qualified. There are some others here and there. The 70k makes no sense.

A few years ago, before hiring really started amongst the majors, the consensus was 10k unique qualified apps.

Today the best number I have heard is 3k. Since the pipeline is flowing, most of regional pilots do not have decades of experience. I doubt the majors would consider most of the FO qualified. Assume half are CA, that would be 10k. The old rule has been 10% are lifers, that would be 2k off, leaving 8k. With the number of upgrades that have happened the last couple of years, I can believe the 3k of unique qualified apps.

Two different people reported that AA has 3,000 apps on file that meet the mins, down from 17,000 in 2007.
Meet the mins on the website or the real preffered mins??

These hiring threads are rather predictable. Especially the part about who’s getting hired and who should get hired. United has historically hired people from diverse backgrounds. I routinely fly with Navy, Air Force, Army gyro, various regionals, corporate and the occasional foreign carrier as background. A CFI getting hired doesn’t mean classes are being filled up with them. A regional First Officer getting hired doesn’t mean classes are filled with them either. Some people get turned down, that’s life. Further some of the absolute best Captains I’ve flown with were also turned down, then hired on their second interview.

I think the point is, guys with experience aren’t even being given a hogan, much less an interview. Guys with no experience (CFIs) are being given interviews. What happens in an interview is up to the individual, but getting to that interview is up to the company. And right now the company is selecting no experience over experience to invite over. It makes no sense. Nothing against CFIs, but if there is experience out there, and the company will not even invite them to an interview, what gives? And I think that’s where the heart burn comes from.

That’s exactly where the heartburn comes from. Yet, for some reason people keep saying the exact same thing and ignore the explanation you and many others have given.

In what other profession are the low-time, low-experience guys given a first look over the guys that are rotting away in the regionals, with 15+ years and 10,000+ hrs experience?

Bass-ackwards if you ask me.

You guys can banter back and forth about this all day and what exactly is it going to do? Nada. In the end none of our opinions really matter. They have their way of hiring, and whether your U2 buddy didn't get a hogan or some riddle wonder kid gets to fly the 756 at 24 yrs old is a mute point. Pilots don't like change and that's exactly what's happening here. A paradigm shift to where airlines will be looking to a pipeline, a known quantity of bodies coming down the line that they can rely on to fly their planes. It's just a matter of time. Warm bodies to fill seats are what keeps recruiting departments at regionals up at night. It will happen here as well. Just further down the road. Expect to see more career pathway programs in the future where kids sign on the dotted line for (insert major airline here) while still in college. Don't believe me? It's already happening and this is just the beginning.

Supply and Demand. Go get your Econ 101 text book out. This problem will go away when the wages are in line.
