This isn’t the military anymore. Your silver oak leaf just turned into 3 stripes and the captain’s you know what.
So a guy less qualified and less experienced deserves the same level of consideration for a job where experience and qualifications are everything. Got it.
Here's a hint: bad things happen even in airliners. Engines explode (Quantas), engines fail and catch fire (numerous cases) and things fall off and cause bad vibrating that require judgement on the course of action UAL yesterday with the 777).
The QRH is not the Holy Bible, sometimes a pilot's experience makes the difference. I'll be willing to bet that Sully's military experience played a big role in his handling of that Airbus when both engines quit. A lesser experienced pilot would have just flew the QRH by the letter and started the APU later and maybe even spazzed out a little. Maybe enough to have filled some coffins that day.
And no I was NOT a military pilot. I am just a guy who after 30 years of flying has had a few things happen and learned a few things. One of which is that experience counts and I'd rather have the most experienced and qualified pilots with me, especially if I'm in the back. And being gay, female, or a minority is NOT a qualifier. Shame on UAL for this! Sorry to step on the feelings of all you little snowflakes out there, but its time to get out of the Forest Of Feelings and hire qualified, experienced pilots.

You can be the most experienced single seat ace of the base or Capt extraordinaire civilian but if you cannot work within a crew you are not needed here.

The road is littered with gods gifts and 9-1 *********s.

I have also been flying the better part of 3 decades and when the crap hits the fan, I find the f/o's that know how to work within a crew and support the left seat person while being technically competent to be preferred folks. Male, Female, minority , doesn't matter.

You can bet that applicants are evaluated of their potential ability to work within a crew here. So, If your Ace of the base (civilian or .mil) interviews but doesn't get hired, maybe they didn't come off as being able to do that in the interview process.

I take it you were never the ace of the base?

I know ton of fighter pilots who work great in the crew atmosphere within airlines. Fighters never fly alone... always in formation of 2+ aircraft... Wingman=Crew... same concept... you don't have to be sitting 2 feet apart to assist another pilot when the crap hits the fan.

All this fuss over getting hired at UAL. Just like back in the 90s. Yet, just like in the 90s, UAL is still the most vulnerable of the large carriers to the next industry shakeout. Especially if Kirby’s plans fail. I would have expected to see these hiring injustice threads exhaust themselves on the DAL / AA / SWA boards first before spilling over here.

Difference being today thousands of well qualified current aviators would like a chance and don't understand why a major airline would choose a Bonanza driver over them.
It's their airline they can hire whomever they choose, just be prepared to give extra sims and 100 hours of IOE, checkairmen and unsuspecting captains be ready with ASAPs, just like the regionals!

I believe we have something like 10,000 apps on file. When I got hired it was 60 or 70k, and they still hired some under qualified pilots. Not a lot, and it didn't make any more sense then, than now. Maybe a fast track for somebodies nephews or niece?

I get paid to fly em', not decide who to hire.
