Let's improve this shall we.

CFI's should only comprise a zero amount of new hires......That's the only really "correct" position of the airline. Any other position at this time is insane.

Why insane? Because in order to hire that magical and special hard working bug smashing CFI, they would need to say NO to 10,000 other hard working-dues paying-dues paid up, knowledgeable, and experienced airline and military pilots.

In summary: no intelligent person would go out and hire a low time CFI and pass on good experience in the present job market.

It's not just my opinion, it's ALPA's. Here is a direct quote from ALPA.

"A pilot progresses into the captain’s position of ultimate authority and responsibility through experience. Experience is vital because no two flights are alike, and the manner in which a particular flight is conducted will depend on many factors. These may include: weather on departure, en route, and at the destination; available navigation aids and air traffic control; aircraft loading; airline and regulatory requirements; and, of course, passenger comfort.

To meet all these changing—and sometimes conflicting— considerations safely and effectively requires knowledge and skill that can be gained only with experience. And only experience prepares a crew for those rare occasions when it is confronted with an emergency that, if not dealt with promptly and precisely, could become a tragedy."

Nope in fact he turned down a job at United in early ‘85 because he knew the strike was coming. He would have been one of the first few classes of 570’s. He proudly wore an ALPA pin for 33 years.

I understand ... Someone tried to get me to apply in late 84 but it was known what was coming and I refused. It is great to be able to look in the mirror without question every morning. Your dad sounds like my kind of guy. I'm glad you are here.

Amen to all of that! Gone are the days you get the crap scared out of you flying for Airnet single pilot, and then get the privilege to fly an ATR loaded up with ice to pay a few dues. Now? Twenty-somethings are complaining about flying an airbus for Spirit. I cringe at a few legacy new hires with zero tpic and having an incapacitated Captain scenario sometimes.

So what. I know of two who's father scabbed. It's not their fault daddy made an extremely poor decision, but they didn't cross a picket line. These two are great guys, excellent pilots, and very supportive of the union.

Is this CFI to UAL something that is actually going to happen soon or is it just a rumor?

If this actually comes to pass then I feel bad for all the pilots out there busting their hump trying to make themselves competitive. Lots of pilots who can't even get a call at a Major and UAL goes and starts some whacky CFI new hire program.

It’s not a rumor. Program started in 2016 and now they’re apparently hitting class. It’s absurd.
