The Jan vacancy has an activation date of the June bid period (May 31). The early September vacancy had an activation of the December bid period. So…it kind of depends.

vacancies have been roughly one per month for like two years.

past performance vs future blah blah.

Historically they haven't forced new hires to GUM. Kinda surprised they did.

Regardless it's a small base with few vacancies. The likelihood of anyone else getting forced there is nonzero but really low.

As for bidding out, it's not uncommon for people to get a bid in training and never set foot in their awarded base.

In direct answer to your question ... less than 6 months, likely much less.

Right, I can understand the forced widebody award or even forced captain award....but being forced to GUM seems a bit extreme...but at the end of the day I guess the company has to fill slots somehow

It's extreme, but starting at year 2 pay ($178/hr) plus $42,000/year after tax dollars is a pure first world problem for a 23 year old. Majority of the people on the seniority list never had this opportunity at 23 years old. This person will clear well over a million total by the time they're 30...

Still sucks for them. We shouldn’t be forcing NHs to GUM. Especially since they’re not starting at 2nd year pay, they are staying at 1st year pay so they have the opportunity to bid out and not be stuck there. The second year pay is what the company wants you to take so they can freeze you. Know your contract folks.

New hires have been forced into GUM for decades, even before there were pay incentives to go there. Of course, that was also before the days of multiple CJOs and new hire captains.

Now, get off my lawn!

I've done some searching through the threads and have struggled to find out the following information, can anyone respond with their own experience: how long is typical between United application submission and a response from the hiring department (ideally positive response, but do they also send out negative resposnes)? Thanks for any help you can provide!

There is no set time.

They process your application and do some type of super secret scoring. Nobody on here is going to know how that score is calculated exactly, but more flight time, more different aircraft, more volunteering, more letters of recommendation, more...... gives you more "points." When they need to send out "X" more invitations to start the interview process (The Hogan) they take the "X" applications with the highest scores and send out invites.

So, if you are super experienced and have bunches of letters of recommendations you will hear very quickly. If not, then update your app frequently as you get more hours/ratings, get letters of recommendation, go to recruiting events and meet folks, get a meet and greet set up with a cheif pilot, etc..

Some folks will hear within days/weeks, others it will take years!

Just finished the entire process with a class date and it took less than a month. Nothing stellar on my end just Captain Regional for 5 years, A330 FO for a little over 5 years, 4 type ratings, and a USC degree (which I think sealed the deal, alumnus was on the interview panel).

Good Luck, Amazing Airline, in Unity...
