Now that the company is consistently updating class dates I figured I would start a place for information to potential new hires. (Hopefully the significant gaps in hiring are over)
the company has started posting class dates on our company portal. Today they announced a march 6 class date.
It appears that the plan is to update planned classes about 2 months out. Here is what we know for now:
JAN 23 (32 in class)
FEB 6
FEB 20
MAR 6
There are NO hard numbers posted for class sizes, just the class dates. These are also furlough classes, so expect some spots to be filled by the 200ish furloughs still out through fall 2019.
Unfilled vacancies over the past few months have been:
737 - EWR, SFO, LAX
320 - EWR, SFO, LAX
756 - EWR, DCA, SFO, LAX
Last few classes have been given 737 and A320.
Good luck to all!

that info from masterofpuppets is 5 years old. Things have changed significantly since then, if you read back a few pages you can get a sense of what those changes are. But you will receive your initial bid first day of Indoc.

There haven't been unfilled spots from vacancy bids to go to new hires. The last vacancy bid only had a combined dozen 320/737 awards, but the most junior pilots on both fleets were awarded it within two months of indoc.

IAD feels like it's been pretty stagnant recently (relative to the crazy movement happening in a lot of places right now, rather than historical averages). Not a lot of slots there in any fleet/seat on recent vacancies. This is just one data point, but at my particular seniority level, it's actually the 2nd most senior of the 11 bases for 737 FOs (with only Guam being more senior).
My crystal ball says that DC may eventually see significant growth 5-10 years down the road, especially if they can get the new terminals figured out. Not sure about anything before that though.

You find out what will be available to your class before the class starts. I found out more than a week ahead of the start date. You'll have enough time to discuss your options with your spouse and friends. You bid on the first day with the oldest picking first. Generally speaking above 40 is the top third while below 30 is the bottom third.

DC is a stagnant base at the moment. We will not see much growth here until they figure out how they will grow it as it has room for growth. The first pieces of the puzzle that United is trying to get ironed out is EWR. Once EWR is figured out, DC will follow.

Adding on, the crew resources update showed no growth in DCA on any airplane until at least July 2024.
