8-D-1-d An Equipment training freeze shall not restrict a Pilot in a lower–numbered
Equipment/pay band from being awarded a vacancy in a higher-numbered Equipment/pay
band, pursuant to the bands described below:
1) 321/320/319FO, 737FO
2) 767/757FO
3) 747FO, 777FO, 787FO, 350FO
4) 321/320/319CA, 737CA
5) 767/757CA
6) 747CA, 777CA, 787CA, 350CA
8-F-5 Pay Rate Protection
8-F-5-a For each Category, on a man-for-man basis, a Pilot who has an un-activated
vacancy award shall be “pay rate protected” (based upon the blended rate of the Category,
if applicable), on the date: 1) another Pilot begins a temporary duty assignment (“TDY”) in
the subject Pilot’s Category if such date is after the subject Pilot’s vacancy bid effective
date; or 2) the activation date of a junior Pilot in the same Category on the same vacancy
bulletin; or 3) the activation date of any Pilot in the same Category on subsequent vacancy
bulletins.
8-F-7 Changes In Pay
8-F-7-a When a Pilot has a vacancy or displacement award to a higher pay rate (based upon
the blended rate, if applicable, of the Category), he shall be paid the new rate upon the
earliest of:
8-F-7-a-(1) His activation date; or
8-F-7-a-(2) If displaced, his date of displacement as published in the displacement
bulletin issued under Section 8-E-3; or
8-F-7-a-(3) The first day of the second Bid Period following the Bid Period that contains
his vacancy award effective date. For example, if his vacancy award effective date is
January 10th, he shall be paid the new rate beginning on the first day of the March Bid
Period; or
8-F-7-a-(4) The date he begins receiving pay rate protection, in accordance with the
provisions of Section 8-F-5.
So, If you get a bid up to a higher paying piece of equipment, you will get the pay bump well before the one year mark even if you don't go to training. The latest would be two months after the effective date of the bid. The effective date of the bid is usually about 4 months after the bid is awarded.

Worse if you’re an old, even current, retiring military guy, though, from the word on street.

It’s not a matter of keeping pace. Each company has different attrition numbers and hires accordingly. Our biggest deal was parking the 747. When you displace off the top it rolls downhill and clogs up the training center. I also read somewhere that UAL has a higher staffing rate per plane than other companies and they seem to be trying to become more efficient in how they use labor. For what it’s worth, I just flew with one of the sim guys who said that the 747 backlog is gone and that as of now all of the max and used airbus planes are all growth. They’ve been hiring and training instructors to handle the load. Hopefully Delta will be complaining about how many we’re hiring for the next few years. Of course another major recession or spike in fuel prices would change the plan.
