PFFFFF I'm basing all my future decisions on getting SFO 737 right at Indoc and now this drop? I hope it changes soon. No clase date yet anyway, and I understand that it will be an easy trade right?
If you get a different base that the one that you want during first day of Indoc, how soon can you bid or get another base, in my case SFO? Sorry the questions, kind of virgin in the 121 bidding system.
Thank you.

You are right, sorry. Actually I was not clear with my question or did not show my real lack of knowledge.
What is "base trade" exactly? You exchange base with another pilot that wants yours? Or the "trade" is with the company? I don't understand how somebody that is more senior than you doesn't have already the base that you are getting as a new joiner.

Every 2-3 months the company posts a bid of open positions. This, almost without exception, includes SFO 737. You express your preference for that position, it is awarded in seniority order. Usually there are more positions than interested parties so everyone who asks for it gets it.
Although it is possible to arrange a person to person trade, this is less common and rarely necessary.
Bottom line: do not stress, you will have a very easy time getting to San Francisco on the 737 quickly if not immediately

Maybe - maybe not. The current company MO is to basically have “unlimited” CA vacancies in every base. Actual numbers don’t matter. It even says so I the CRU. The goal is for people to upgrade to CA where they want to be CA and that has been IAH. They will just force new hire FOs into bases that are high on CA and low on FO.
SFO has an imbalance today - not enough CA and too many FO. No need to allow more FO into SFO if the number of CA doesn’t grow. There is no indication that people all of a sudden bid SFO CA.
at this point I also wouldn’t expect SFO FO to bid out. Everyone who doesn’t want to be in SFO already had an opportunity to bid out in the last several vacancy bids.
(all of that applies to NB and primarily 737)

OK. Thank you Brickfire.
Clear how it works. So I might get it from day one, or by the time that training is done. Worst case scenario, at least for how things are looking now as mentioned by TFAYD, I'll get IAH or another base and after few months the "trade" should be available ( I understand obviously that those 2/3 months can be 4/6 or even more, but not likely for 737 SFO)

I think you would have the exact same experience in trying to get to SFO if you for some reason were not able to get that inititally in class. The current base trade process works, plus we are having vacancy bids about every 4-6 weeks, so in the unlikely event you can't get SFO as your initial assignment, you will get a trade/bid to SFO practically immediately.

Many many years ago in my class they had very limited ORD slots as a 727 Second Officer, but many in Denver. So, I was "forced" into a DEN S/O slot. Since "normally" getting DEN initially was rare, I was able to trade that with an engineer in the prior class and never had to actually commute to DEN.

Few more questions from a newbie:
Can somebody on reserve pick-up flights?
If that is possible, can be done from another base?
As a line holder? Can 777 SFO bid, trade or pick up trips from IAH for example?
How senior or desirable is the only trip to Buenos Aires? IAH-EZE, B-777.
Thank you!!!

2. You cannot pick up out of base on reserve.
3. Yes, you can pick up out of base, but it must be done the day prior.
4. No idea how senior it goes. It recently went to a reserve friend of mine on the 777 down there. Idk how sought after it is as it starts and ends with a red eye. I'd imagine it's pretty junior unless people like it for the commutability aspect. Some IAH person can tune in with more info.
If you end up selecting UAL over AAL congrats and welcome to United Airlines!

1. You can put in requests to pick up flying on your reserve days, 48 hours in advance prior to a certain time, I can't remember it anymore. We call this aggressive pick up.
