They did this for my redoc (when one's been out for a long time, they would send you back through indoc) class and the classes before and after us. Granted, that's been a while, but I am surprised that they'd force someone into the 787. With so many newhires every week, there should be some flexibility on drop composition.
I don't think this is a thing for basic indoc.... yes- the company will force someone onto the 787 if it is the last thing available - just like they have forced countless others onto the 756 which also does long haul international work.

I don't remember any "dry-run" on day one.

What I remember is the instructors saying "You get what you get, and you don't get upset. If you don't like what you got, the door is over there".

we are having atlas pilots showing up as new hires
why not give them the WBs open spots since they have plenty of experience on crossings etc
if they want

mate you familiar with how seniority works? Each class gets ranked by age for seniority purposes and the most senior gets first choice. The most junior gets last choice. Which may not be a choice at all. You are suggesting abrogating seniority.

The people with international WB experience at Atlas or the Military are welcome to bid 777/787 on Day 1 of Basic Indoc as their seniority in class permits. At the end of the day - if nobody wants them - then the 8 ball in the class will be flying a widebody airplane with a captain that could easily be their parent - which I don't think has happened yet but I'm sure it will be posted on FT when it does!

FWIW, I’m quite sure there are WB Captains flying with FOs who could be their parents. I have an Indoc start date, but haven’t started yet…and one of my Indoc classmates was born a year and a half after I graduated college. I’m not even the oldest guy in the class.

Been there, done that, literally. (If you count the 767 as a widebody). October 1999 so i was still on probation, but the 767 was not my initial new hire bid. Mom was the Captain, and I the FO.

Anyone have any of the latest class drops? I like to see the trends of where everyone is going as a new hire.

This weeks class: (70 total)
39 - 737 FO (DCA,EWR,SFO,LAX)
13 - 756 FO (DCA, EWR, SFO, LAX)
7 - Airbus FO (DCA, EWR, SFO, LAX, IAH, ORD)
5 - 787 FO (EWR, SFO)
6 - 777 FO (EWR, SFO)

Expect this to continue each week for a long time with 500 planes on order. Anybody could have picked 777 FO since it went to the bottom.

Just to add the amount of widebody slots is unusual.

Usually classes are EWR, LAX , SFO mostly 737 and slightly less Airbus, with a few less 756. Sometimes ORD, IAH and DEN make an appearance but I wouldn’t suspect to see that till after next vacancy.
