DCA is the internal company base designation for essentially the DC metro. You are primarily based at IAD, but depending on fleet, could also cover trips out of DCA and BWI. No one is based at ‘just DCA’…..which might be what you were asking here.

thanks. What fleet would cause a pilot to be based at dca ? Also is this applicable to reserve pilots only? .

If you are a line holder in the Washington DC base (DCA), 737 and 320 pilots have trips that originate at Reagan National (KDCA), but it is a smaller percentage than Dulles (KIAD) or Baltimore-Washington (KBWI). You can bid the DCA trips as a higher priority if you desire. If you are on reserve, you are expected to originate at Dulles, but do occasionally get called to go out of BWI or DCA. There is no ‘IAD’ domicile at United, it’s referred to as ‘DCA’ despite the vast majority of trips operating at Dulles. Clear?

Like the other poster said, DCA is what the base is called for bidding purposes, but the majority of the flying and all administrative services are out of IAD. A Dulles-based NB pilot will also fly out of DCA and BWI. WB flying is out of IAD.

Not really sure if I understand what you are asking about reserves. Reserves cover whatever is needed, so they could be out of any airport mentioned above — you wouldn’t know that in advance to an assignment.

Edit…. Like dmeg said. If you’re looking for an answer to a different question, you might want to rephrase it.

What does it take to get out of the pool and into class? I thought that it was strictly by interview date however it seems that people who interviewed after me are in the sept 14th class. Are there factors other than date of interview that determine a class date offer?

Nope that's it. OTS, CJO order. A better question to ask right now is how long after the CJO did they receive their class dates. They don't give you much time to respond to the class date offer, so if you missed it or for some reason it wasn't sent, you may want to call/e-mail.

Its not by cjo date. They try to assign each class with different backgrounds in mind. My class was about 50/50 civilian/military.

I can’t speak to all others but my class was 50/50 military and civilian. The civilian I believe were all 121 background (Republic, Skw, Mesa, ZW, Cmt). Maybe 1 135 person. The military were 50/50 pure military (no other experience) and the other 50% had some 121, mostly Southern/Atlas but a few had regional time. The pure military were all c-130/c-17/C-32/P-8/buisness jet. I don’t think their were any pure fighter jets in it. Very diverse backgrounds and all very experienced.

My class was a little less than 50% mil, but we all interviewed the same week so were all the same cjo timeline. Perhaps things changed and they offer spots out of cjo from the pool to diversify new hire classes, I wouldn’t think so but you never know. I was one of only two straight mil time hires, everyone else had regional time, two fractional, and had one each from AA, NK, JB, GY, K4. I’d say 1/3 of my class was Skywest. Hope that helps
