The ATL Mesa domicile has nothing to do with a change in UAL's service to ATL. It is a way for Mesa to recruit qualified pilots from Expressjet's closing ATL operation.

Kirby is poking us in the eye.
If UAL is having Mesa go into ATL in order to compete for passengers who would otherwise be flying on Delta that's just plain silly. Mesa is not a good representation of the UAL product and would be akin to sending in Peter Pan in against Godzilla. The passengers will be ****ed they had to tolerate Peter Pan's lack luster enthusiasm and will be bored of the constant excuses why Peter just didn't have enough ferry dust to bring Godzilla to his knees. Meanwhile. Godzilla enthusiasts will be enjoying spacious-comfortable jets on transcontinental routes connecting their global needs with efficiency and a high level of customer satisfaction.
Kirby doesn't care who represents UAL in competing with Delta. It's a big mistake. Need to tighten up scope. Passengers just look at the logo on the tail. They really won't know it's Mesa, they'll think it's United. Kirby won't care either.
Problem is: ATL, like EWR and other busy major airports are slot limited. If you have slots into ATL then don't waste them on RJ's. The footprint of an RJ and ATC spacing requirements are the same for an RJ or a 737. Better to use a 737, put in more pax, make more revenue, and better utilize the slot. The bonus is it would better service our network by connecting more passengers.

And as mentioned, ATL is not slot controlled.

A better question is WTF are we serving ATL with RJs? They should have been ungauged to mainline long ago

Anything having to do with Mesa would be a reduction in service. The second we send them in people will be running into the arms of our competitor due to Mesa's crappy service record and reliability.
Slight thread drift here, buddy of mine gets to the A/C 45 mins before departure and the F/O is a new-hire, former Mesa wonder kid. F/O taps on his watch at the Captains arrival telling the very senior guy that he's surprised he made it to the A/C and that "everyone" has been looking for him. Said Captain asks him what the hell he is getting at and is met with a blank stare. Long story short said F/O's behavior continues to slide and Captain removes him at the end of the first leg.
Best part of all is that when asked about where he's worked prior to United said F/O says that he has "extensive" airline experience. When pimped for further info he claims that extensive translates into short stops at both Trans-States and Mesa.
Don't think I'd be bragging about stops at either of those carriers despite their extensiveness.
As a disclaimer, I personally have had the pleasure to fly with several Pilots from both of those carriers and they've been nothing short of exceptional. The only difference between them and the D-Bag my buddy flew with is that these Pilots knew what POS airlines both Mesa and TS were and all freely admitted it.
