Delta will not buy JB in the near future as the required divestment of JFK gates alone would invite more competitors back into the NY and BOS markets.

United could buy B6 and would then equal DAL and AA. No way DAL ever comes close to anti trust approval.

You don’t think they would make united divest EWR gates? Too much control over NYC to include all 3 airports. I don’t think they will let any of the big 3 buy anyone during good economic times. MAYBE during the next bankruptcy cycle

I don't understand why everyone thinks the Anti-Trust section of the Department of Justice is still in business. Don't y'all watch the news anymore?

Maybe its just force of habit to think the government is still concerned about things like this, but I'm convinced American, Delta, AND United could do a three-way merger, then buy up Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue, Spirit, and Frontier, staple the lot, and no one in the Administration would even notice, much less care. Those guys don't fly commercial.

I make no value statement regarding this as a good or bad thing. I am simply observing that Washington is not operating as it ever has before in our lifetimes.

Our lifetime?! Where were you the pervious 8 years? Not much happened except Executive orders! It hasn't even been a year yet since this new administration took over. Besides the real work of government happens below the political appointment level. There would be an anti trust issue.

They did have an interest in regulating business. As did the previous administration, and the one before that, and the fifteen before that. I think you have to go back to at least the 1920s, and probably the 1890s, to find an Administration that was more philosophically opposed to any regulation than the current one.

For better or worse, it is undeniably different.

Really... ask Time Warner and ATT who are trying to merge why they were now blindsided with the requirement to divest CNN to make it happen by the new justice dept, or let me guess.... that is just a way to punish CNN by the current administration.

All mergers allow for the govt to meddle in capitalism which allows for the shakedowns/favors to be payed out to the politicians. Wall street and current mgmt makes bundles while the employees are left holding the bag of a bloated company, all the while the slate is cleared for newer, cheaper entrants into the market.
