I wish that all the UAL pilots could have been at the DEN LCA meeting recently and got to hear Kirby and Oscar talk, I'm a 25-year guy and its the most impressed I have ever been, by far by management at UA.
They spoke exactly about all this and Oscar said we will get beat up the next 18 months or so by Wall Street, the analysts, and Investors but he had prepared the board and institutional investors for it.
They both said things we have all said for years, you cant shrink to profitability, Smizek dug a deep hole that we have to fill, you cant give up assets(JFK-LAX), you cant run from a fight with LCCs.
They explained in detail what their plans were I won't repeat in a public forum.
But most of all Kirby explained how his job is to position the airline for the LONG term, its Oscars job to handle Wall Street. Kirby pointed out the analyst get upset when UAL is growing or taking back market share that was lost during the merger when the running of the airline had gone to the back burner.
He said what most of you don't realize is the analyst and the firms they work for DONT JUST OWN UAL STOCK, THEY OWN ALL AIRLINES STOCK INCLUDING LCCs. So if UAL does well at becoming a better, more profitable, more market share airline that means many others will do worse, the Firms don't want that, they want the status quo.
Let's just hope their plans works, it was very well thought out and reasonable IMO. I am more optimistic than ever in my 25 years here.

Did he reach into people's wallets directly, or did he do something via side-bar's?
My real concern is that we had better not rely too much on regionals. The product is not as reliable and the schedule integrity is not there. I also want to insure that he doesn't try to work-around the spirit and the letter of our scope language.

Personally I never liked Kirby and he just did not motivate me. Parker is at least honest about his feelings and Isom is a smart guy who remains enthusiastic about working here. Kirby is still stuck inside this “manage costs reduce mainline grow regionals” era which may have to happen in the future but right now when Delta is doing one thing and you do the opposite? What? Delta is showing what needs to be done, yet he’s still wanting to do the opposite. Screw Kirby and I’m glad he’s gone, he was a dick who couldn’t even pass pilot training and takes it out on us to this day.

Bethune had a model of centralized control and decentralized execution on the management side. He put a pilot in charge of all things airplane, put inflight under flight ops, and simply ran it lean and mean. He trusted employees to make decisions and pushed accountability to the lowest level. I think he learned that stuff as an enlisted man in the Navy. On the corporate side he developed and managed relationships at Boeing and GE and on wallstreet to infuse the business plan. I think he is one of those rare leaders who had the ability to get everyone on the same page for the sake of the mission.
I was impressed by his honesty, and his candor. He actually spoke pilot speak and he could speak bag thrower speak all at the same time. He could just communicate with and to everyone in the room, without talking down to anyone. He kept his arrogance in the trunk of his Porche. This allowed him to get the best out of everyone around him.

I'm 10 years here at mainline after having spent almost 10 years at the regional level. I also was fortunate to have been at one of these LCA meetings and heard the talks.
I also heard everything from Kirby you did, but by far the thing that stuck with me was just how bad he wants/needs of scope relaxation. I knew then for sure, what many friends from American were saying about how he does business.
I understand he has a job to do, but so do we as a pilot group and union. Keep the eye on the prize. His prize is 175 RJs and lots more of them.

I was sorta wondering why Kirby was let go from AMR?? What did he do well there and what did he do not so well?
Did he reach into people's wallets directly, or did he do something via side-bar's?

At least that's what I heard from my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend who heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who was with Ferris when he passed out at 31 Flavors last night.

Perceptive seems to be everything in the context of what we hear.

And what do you think if we give them to him? But ONLY if a UAL pilot on the UAL list flying under the UAL UPA flys ALL additional 170/175 or larger planes?
