Went on family vacation to SYD December 26th to January 9th last year.
Bought tickets.
Might have got a few of us on LAX-SYD. Coming home no pass riders had left SYD for several days.
Lucky you have a place to stay. We rented a very nice 3 bedroom/3 bath townhouse for 9K US.

Quit being a cheap airline pilot and buy seats so you can relax and know you're going to and from.

I would if I knew my December schedule, but I likely won't have it ironed out until about December 17th.

I would buy the seats and plan my schedule around that.

Geeze, you seem disconnected from reality? What if he's jr? Should he buy refundable tix? Looks like 2,000 bucks for that per person. lighten up.

I recently did the SYD trip. Down on Atlas out of HNL (keep track of their delays); and back on Hawaiian with a lie down 1st class - several more were open.

You have to check in at the ticket counter very early, then intercept the Captain prior to Customs. Once you get that signature, the counter will charge you $75 departure fee and issue a boarding pass.

Hawaiian crew was specific to let them know I made it, or else he planned to come back looking for me. Nice to hear it, and then the seat was great.

Depending on day of the week you can come back via Brisbane. I couldn't find a usable option to come back on Atlas. But Atlas will take you, cater you a hot meal or two, and list you on the GENDEC. You might get a crew rest bunk room depending on the crew.

Aside from the electronic visa, listing at the gate is fine, just be aware that you're on the hook for any customs fees. More info here:

Good luck!
Honestly not really the norm anymore - I've gone several times. Used to be much tougher but the last couple of years, days with 100+ open seats are not uncommon at all (take the rest of this week, every single LA-Sydney flight has between 70-120 open seats). Exceptions, of course, especially around the holiday period but its not hard to get over/back anymore.

I do the trip regularly out of SFO...find it easier to go via HNL both ways. Hawaiian has been great every time. Cockpit follows up and makes sure you get on...F/A's take care of you in the back.....great attitude and that aloha spirit goes a long way.

Atlas or HA down to either SYD or just HA to BNE. The BNE trip only goes a few days a week..SYD is daily both ways. QF or Jetstar can get you to SYD in an hour out of BNE. Don't forget the option of Jetstar to HNL out of SYD on the way back. Mid week trips are best for HNL legs. A box of Host Choc Macadamia nuts out of HNL does wonders at the QF and Jetstar service desks I have found just fyi.
