And if you remember, that number was questioned (politely ridiculed actually) by many here, including me. I think I quipped that we are more likely to have 9000 than 18,000. While we didn't hit either number, my 9000 joke is a lot closer to the current number than 18,000. LOL
Just shows to go you how even Mgmt doesn't really know what's going on more than 6 months out and/or flat out lies about the true plans as some sort of twisted diversion from the truth.

Yes, except the 12 brand new ones.
Yes. AAY makes a point of owning all their stuff. The stock price is overinflated, but we aren't like most other airlines who are mortgaged to the hilt, with huge debt loads and no tangible assets.
Huge route structure in LAS and PHX markets (shutting midwesterners who should be on UAL)
Slots and gates in LAX
Owns Florida (UAL has talked about a SE hub for YEARS)
Most airplanes and equipment wholly owned. Comes with a powerhouse travel agency.
It actually makes sense if you think about it.
Bingo.
If UAL is simply looking for more used airplanes, buying an airline is not required, and is in fact, a ridiculously expensive way to do it. There are lots of gently used airplanes out there.
On the other hand, if another airline actaully has assets not otherwise available (gates, slots, route structure, etc) the math changes considerably.

I think 1200 new hires won't happen because they have no intentions of that. The pilot list has remained fairly steady for years. Yet every year we hear the same BS. They tell you that because it makes people behave a certain way because that's what we want to hear.
Common sense overrides everything. They will hire but just barely enough to cover retirements all the while telling us what we want to hear.
