I'm had a crash"boat" on a boat in the San Pedro harbor. Absolutely loved it. Slept on the boat and used the SP marina showers. If you're military the LA AFB housing is down in the SP area so they have a full up gym there (as well as on the LA AFB proper).

Flew with a guy who was at Virgin America, he was crash padding on a boat in SFO, there are a few Virgin guys doing that, he really liked it, bar and restaurant in the marina and he said it was pretty reasonable. Try posting on the Virgin forum, wish I had his number I'd pass it on. I was considering bidding out there and doing the same.
