Timing is everything. They are running near empty on IAH FOs today. Is this due to our hiring slowdown?

Hmmmm, wonder if California sick is coded differently in Ccs.

So, what would prevent just anyone to use the phone and call in"California sick "? There is nothing that the crew desk has that indicates where you live.

Any LAX or SFO-based pilot can call in CA sick. You don't have to live in CA.

I'm not sure whether it's available to someone who lives in CA and is based somewhere other than LAX or SFO.

Do you have to reside in CA? I mean I fly out of SFO and pay CASDI so why not have CA Sick available?

if you pay the CASDI then you can take it... regardless of where you live from what I've read.

And don't forget, there is pilot contract in force with several decades of "past practice." Can't think of any pilot offhand that has ever experienced serious discipline for one too many sick calls.

When push comes to shove, here's how the conversation goes:
Assistant Chief Pilot: We are having this discussion because you've called in sick too many times.

Union Rep: Are you ordering my pilot to fly sick in violation of the FAR's and UAL's FOM?

Assistant Chief Pilot: (stammering) Um...no...of course not.

(end of transcript)
That said, I know one pilot who who made the front page of the paper (back when those were a thing) in a spectacular racing boat accident while "sick." That one was harder to explain.
Yeah, this is where you don't want the spouse to post your vacation to Cancun or Disney on Facebook or twitter. They can be dangerous.

It's available to you. I don't live in CA and pay CASDI so I'm eligible, although I haven't used it yet. May need to in a while due to wife's health issues ...

Not true. You could be jumpseating to take care of a sick relative. Jumpseat or pass travel doesn't matter. You aren't the sick one, you're transporting yourself to take care of the sick person.
