Non-rev loads for LAX-HNL for OALs
I'm trying to get my wife and daughter to HI on a ZED fare ticket in about 2 weeks from now. LAX-HNL
I have looked on the United website and checked the available seats for several flights. They all show a lot of seats open. I know it is 2 weeks out so a lot can change, but I noticed that when I look at tomorrow's flight it also shows a lot of seats open. So I'm wondering if the website does not really show the true amount of open seats or are the planes not running full?
Also, in general, is it fairly easy to get on a LAX-HNL flight as a non-rev if the flight is open or are there like 100 non-revs every day?
Thanks

Be careful about seats sold vs seats assigned. Seats sold always exceed seats assigned until the door is closed. For instance, on the United app (and website), UA1158 on 9 June (2 weeks from today) shows 60 coach seats available yet employeeRes shows only 44 seats available. That's because employeeRes reflects seats sold while the seat map shows seats assigned. Many don't select a seat until prompted 24 hours prior, and some even wait until they get to the airport, so the seat map will not accurately reflect how many tickets have been sold, and thereby how full the flight is. Check employeeRes to see how full the flights are and to monitor a specific flight as the date approaches.

Can a non-United employee use employeeRes? The page has a link that says, "non-United", but when you click on it , it wants a username.

Many customers simply don't select seats. Or for example, the Basic Economy fares won't allow a seat assignment until checkin. The system still won't allow more seats sold than are authorized for the flight and I don't think many people are looking at seat maps to determine availability when purchasing tickets anyway. From a pass riding perspective, seat maps are a terrible thing to go off that's for sure!

As for LAX-HNL on the 777, I've seen some weight restrictions recently due to cargo. There are usually some seats open that are filled as much as possible with nonrevs. I don't know about the guppy flights and I don't want to know.
Do ZED fares have priority over internal nonrevs? I don't have an answer to this, but if they're below UAL nonrevs, I would be very cautious about going ZED on United LAX-HNL during the summer.
