And I dont think I've ever seen anyone do it as smooth as George can. In my opinion if cleared for the visual have at it, when needing to comply with altitude, and speed restrictions, why wouldn't you want the highest level of automation to help out.
In the broadest of terms when the autopilot isn't doing what needs to be done, there is a group that will just sit and watch versus clicking everything off and doing what needs to be done. The reliance on automation is prevalent.

In regards to "a smooth as George", I know quite a few who are smoother. They have achieved the moniker of Human Autopilot.

Some can pull it off while many can’t.
For years I handflew, raw data, almost every visual approach from about 5000' down. These were usually smaller airports without much vectoring. Now coming into ORD on a Wednesday afternoon bank, screw that. Until about 1000-2000'. But that's just me.

I still handfly departures up to 10K. Don't need a cookie though.

Same here. I usually fly it up to 18 and turn it off coming down in the 3-5 range. First and foremost on my mind when I am hand-flying is comfort. No crazy manipulations or herky-jerky inputs that I get to witness far to often. Make it smooth and you can hand fly it to the moon as far as I'm concerned.

Forgot to add if you throw in a overcast ceiling, turbulence, or crosswind, the autopilot usage factor goes up exponentially. Just saying.

What is the latest on this program? Has it been discontinued?

I heard (so that makes it true of course) the ones that are currently in the program will continue, but after that the program is halted.

I didn’t see anything on LATA or UA’s site about it so I guess it is halted. It figures as I wanted to get more information on it for when I have my CFI.

There’s probably a good reason for it halting....

Still on the Lata website, but application link has been removed. Hope it was stopped but I highly doubt that’s the case.

I just flew with a Captain whose son started the Lufthansa program this month. He was flight instructing in a Cirrus and after 18 months, he moves to United. I think he said his son was in Prescott, AZ.
