Capacity management? Just guessing, but plenty of reports recently pointing to major airlines aiming to increase RASM by cutting capacity.
Indefinite deferrals on 65 new guppy's, among others, must've had a serious impact on hiring. Signing an agreement with Air Wisconsin for the same number of 50-seat RJs was, textbook Kirby, and quite telling of the new strategy. Newly acquired CFO Levy and his ex-Allegiant cohorts have also left their mark with a myriad of cost eliminating initiatives, to include cutting management overhead (400?), canvassing the used market for replacement aircraft, etc.
Just speculating, but looking at the new 'economy class' (designed to fend off ULCC expansion), Oscar's team is focused on ensuring long term, sustainable profitability, whatever the cost. Cost/capacity discipline will likely be the drivers going forward.

Ok after almost 4 decades of this business and airline I agree that one month is not a trend, but it's that one month added to the many subtle change we've seen and heard over the past few months which made me post the comment/question.
The Board fight, new senior management positions, airplane order delays and possible cancelations and now Kirby with his world tour rhetoric directed mainly to pilots about bringing the fight all add up to one thing, stagnation and or retraction.
Yes United will survive, but don't buy that Captain house, especially in MCO.

Denigrating the reliability of the Bus fleet - this coming from a 787 pilot...
You have no idea what you are talking about. The reliability of the Airbus fleet is better than it has ever been since UAL bought them. (UAL was the US launch customer of the 319/320 - you probably weren't a United pilot then, I was)
POS - really? Ask our passengers and FA's which narrow body they would prefer to fly on or operate.
I'd call you a tool but that would be an insult to tools so I won't do that. I will just call you completed uninformed about the company you claim you work for.

Ah, I was amused at the insults thrown until you flamed yourself on so called facts. I started as well on the airbus from its inception. But you would be the tool for suggesting we were the launch customer in the USA. NORTHWEST/DAL(now) had us beat by about a mere 4 years or so. You were "so" close though......
And America West had them. Sorry tool times 2

If your source was at the same meeting with Howard that I was last week, they simply misunderstood what was said, 300 in the first part of the year and another 300+ later in the year with a slow down in the summer.

The 747 only does seven flights a day, so only 14 total are used in a weekly schedule, the others are used as spares and one is dedicated to charters, 14 777's plus the 5-6 787's we got this year will be able to cover the 747 going away.
