Default C5 Recall - Next Steps - Important

Fellow Union Brothers and Sisters,

Yesterday all 3 EWR C5 Officers had recall resolutions passed by more then a 5 to 1 margin at our Local Council meeting. Attendance with most pilots holding proxies was very impressive.

I’m confident due to yesterdays overwhelming success at our C5 meeting. Recalls will now proceed in multiple United councils. The United MEC, United management and ALPA national are all taking note of our unity and stead fast resolve to not accept a woefully inadequate concessionary contract.

Yesterdays C5 recall at our LC meeting was just step 1 of very important multi step process to recall the C5 officers. Please read the very important message below explaining exactly what happens next.

We still have much work to do before we can take back our union and negotiate a truly industry leading contract.

HOW C5 RECALL SUPPORTERS CAN SNATCH DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY

To My C5 Brothers & Sisters in Support of the Recall:

Today was an important step in the process to recall. Many or most of you are breathing big sighs of relief right now no doubt and and the supporters of the current Officers are counting on you to feel that way. You are taking it too early. You can still snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The astounding turn out today was probably record setting. The current officers know that many of you are not well versed in the recall process and will most assuredly try to capitalize on the false sense of security you think you just recalled them. You did not.

All you voted for today was to have ALPA National commence a ballot to the entire C5 membership to vote Yes or NO to ACTUALLY recall the current C5 officers. You only voted to call the question.

So what happens next? ALPA N will conduct the ballot above. If the ballot count is NO< the recall movement is over. If the ballot is affirmative, the current C5 LEC officers will immediately be relieved of their duties and powers. I can see you thinking no big deal, we'll get that. Think again. A great deal of the C5 membership will think they were already recalled. It's imperative to keep the education campaign in high gear. You must convince your fellow C5 pilots to vote and show up.

So, lets say the recall ballot comes back affirmative. You are happy and it's over, they are instantly gone. You take another sigh of relief. Here's the second opportunity to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The MEC Chair will select an interim LEC Chair. His/Her sole duty is to call a meeting to elect interim officers. You can absolutely bet that choice will not be pro-recall. That choice will be a staunch ally of the outgoing administration.

The interim chair must call a meeting for the purpose of selecting interim officers. In order to vote in this meeting a C5 member must be physically present in person to vote and there are no proxies allowed. Candidates do not need to be present but the pro-recall members better have candidates ready and willing to step up and they need to be campaigning in the crew rooms to get their name out there.

The current administration knows the turn out at this meeting is going to be smaller. Probably much smaller. I have literally seen 24 people pick repsfor a whole base in a contract cycle. You can absolutely guarantee the current administration is going to have straw bale candidates ready to step up (think CA Brown) and they are going to be working very hard to fill that meeting with voters who support their candidate.
You can also rest assured the interim chair will give minimum notice of the meeting, send out the absolute minimum number of notices required to announce the meeting, and I would not put it past him/her to select a location that is difficult at best to get to, especially for commuters.
They might even use their access to information to determine the optimum day to call the meeting: that is, on a day or time when the largest percentage of members are flying. They may specifically target known leaders of the recall in the hope they can't be there to speak or vote.

The meeting where the interim officers are elected is the peak of the mountain in this uphill battle. You must be physically at this meeting to vote. You must convince your fellow recall voters to come to this meeting and vote. If. you do not succeed in this task, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is highly likely.
You will have won the recall but given the current administration a pass to replace themselves with their allies. You can absolutely be assured they will have their supporters (many of whom will be on trip loss at your expense) there to support their stand in candidates. I can't really describe how important it is to be at this meeting with a huge voting block. This meeting is the most critical event in this process.

So, let's say you get the crowd there and you get the right people in the interim positions. You jump for joy and say to yourself we did it. Here is the next opportunity to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. All you did was bring in a temporary set of officers.

This is actually very important because the c5 interim reps will have a massive amount of voting power. They will have the power to force the MEC to take a breath and re-think where we are going at a very critical juncture which is the real goal of the process but this is just a battle win. The war can still be lost because they are interim reps.

Very shortly after the interim reps are in place, the process to start the normal election process for permanent reps is just around the corner. It is safe to assume the PRO-TA crowd will be looking for payback. They are going to capitalize on the notion that the pro-recall supporters are thinking they won the war. They are going to be working behind the scenes preparing candidates to run against the interim reps. They are going to be doing everything they can do to re-establish the old guard and they will if the pro-recall MIGS don't realize they only won a tiny battle today.

This process is a drawn out war full of critical battles and the pro-TA crowd has a monumental advantaqe because they know the pro-recall crowd will think they won and will be recovering from the battle to recall. They will expect you to get comfortable while they sneak up on you.

This recall is monumental because of the timing and the event evolution. The current administration is going to do everything they can do to vote for Insler at the NATIONAL meeting. They are going to do everything thing they can to rush another TA at us before the interim reps in the recall process get seated. They will force you to force them to follow the C&BL and will interfere in every way possible to neuter the recall efforts and results.

THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN KEEP TODAY"S VICTORY IS TO REALIZE YOU HAVE WON NOTHING YET AND KEEP PRESSING THE ATTACK UNTIL THE ENTIRE PROCESS IS DONE. YOU MUST GET THE PRO-RECALL SUPPORTERS TO NOT ONLY VOTE, YOU. MUST CONVINCE THEM TO BE PHYSICALLY PRESENT AT THE INTERIM ELECTION MEETING.

YOU MUST CONVINCE THE PRO RECALL VOTERS TO BE PHYSICALLY PRESENT AT THE INTERIM REP ELECTION MEETING.

YOU MUST CONVINCE..........................................

One thing is for certain - the singular most important priority for the UAL MEC right now is getting TI elected to national. It’s why they rushed the Tumi TA out. It’s why they delayed its failure until after the national elections. And it’s why they will do whatever they have to do to secure C5’s votes for TI at the BOD. After all, C5 has the most votes of any council in ALPA, more than several of the entire airlines. TI’s election depends on those votes.

I thought Council 44 (DAL ATL) had the most. They have something on the order of 4,000. Total size of the base is nearly 4,800, so minus probies seems about right.

I believe that changed post-COVID. I could be wrong. Regardless, C5 is pivotal to TI’s ascension. The UAL MEC will do whatever they have to do to secure those votes.

i believe Council 44 has two sets of reps - council split in half due to size. At least that’s the way it used to be.
