Hey guys,

I'm starting in two weeks as a CQFO and can't wait to get started!! I just have a few quick questions that have come up while I'm studying:

1. Does TSA restrict other pilot employment (Part 91 for example)?

2. Buddy passes on United (want to be based in DEN hopefully)?

3. Why does the Vmo have no speed listed between 8,000 - 10,000ft?

4. Why the hell would you open the Direct Vision Window at upwards of 140 knots??!!

5. For engine start limits on the ground, why does it have the 5 on, 5 off, then below 1 on, 1 off? Is the 5/5 cumulative but it's really just limited to 1 minute on at a time or could you theoretically dry motor it for 5 minutes?

Thanks and Happy New Year!!

Don't worry about the limitations and memory items too much. It's good to start studying them but they won't be tested on for a few weeks in.

#5 is because our old DO wanted a plane to keep flying. An old EP was taking about 1:30 to start back in the day. A crew wrote it up, MX ops checked it (with DO permission), and a week later...new SOP revision. 3 weeks later, the engine would not start at all, and had to be replaced.

Glad he is gone, that is the old TSA

Congrats and welcome aboard. I'll try to answer some of your questions.

1. Does TSA restrict other pilot employment (Part 91 for example)?

You are restricted on all commercial flying as it affects the max hours you can work under 117. It does not restrict you from poking holes in the sky with your friends.

2. Buddy passes on United (want to be based in DEN hopefully)?

According to our benefits package, we don't get buddy passes just the option of a second enrolled friend.

3. Why does the Vmo have no speed listed between 8,000 - 10,000ft?

It increases linearly from 250 to 320 knots from 8,000-10,000'. In the US, you will never go above 250 below 10,000' and the ops specs also restricts you. Embraer designed it that way because in other countries you can exceed 250 below 10,000'.

4. Why the hell would you open the Direct Vision Window at upwards of 140 knots??!!

Other airplanes have this limitation and it is primarily due to ditching. Usually a QRH will call for opening the window prior to ditching to allow egress.

5. For engine start limits on the ground, why does it have the 5 on, 5 off, then below 1 on, 1 off? Is the 5/5 cumulative but it's really just limited to 1 minute on at a time or could you theoretically dry motor it for 5 minutes?

I haven't figured out this one out but according to the limitation, yes, you could dry motor for 5 min.

Hmm. Interesting, the way I'm interpreting FAR 117, it states that all FDP, and flight hour limitations are "on behalf of the certificate holder", meaning the airline or operator you fly for. I don't recall seeing anything in there about cumulative flight times that include all other commercial work, for example say flight instruction. From what I understand it only applies to 121, and 91k operations. Thoughts?

That is true. I'd imagine it hasn't changed because prior to 117, it counted. I'm sure the CP can waive it. Changing things with their POI is a real PITA.

Changing things with any POI is a PITA. The only other reason I could think of is that the airline wants to limit their liability by getting sued if there was an accident outside the scope of the certificate holders perview. I could see some ambitious lawyer trying to link the pilots outside flying activity to the airline, and implying that the airline was somehow negligent or responsible for the accident.

This right here is what's wrong with people's mentality now days. They blatantly say they want you to know them all, on day 1. Just because you aren't tested on it day 1 doesn't mean you should blow it off until then. My instructor asked us the entire sheet on day 1. The people that knew it made an impression, the ones that didn't made one as well.

Especially being a CQFO, you're going to have enough sh!t to learn, I'd advise not having to worry about limitations a week before your checkride like a few people that are no longer at the company.

I'm done... Carry on with you contract measuring or whatever you guys enjoying doing on your days off.
