For those of you who are only 21, or 22, and not 23: I'd go to the interview anyways. Why? Experience! You can't take experience away from someone. It's a free flight there and back, just pay for a couple meals and a hotel room, do the interview, and if they say "call us a month before your 23rd birthday" so what... I have a few friends that are with airlines right now that are 21, and 22. They might be out of a job soon.... we shall see...

Anyone know the make up of the last few classes? Is TSA getting mostly low time CFIs or is there a wide variety of high time pilots? Thank you.

In my TSA class in January there was everything from 26,000hr Comair pilot all the way to me at 1,900hrs TT... We had a citizen whale driver sitting around 13,000hrs, and a few 2-5k time pilots... LITERALLY EVERYWHERE...

Why would these guys go to TSA when Jetblue, Spirit, Allegiant, and Virgin America(Although they have stopped for the time being) have all been hiring?

That is a personal choice. Only they can answer the why. When Delta closed the doors on Comair and you have just lost your job you go with the first place to hire you. Just to keep current till your target company will hire you. It is a game of staying alive. Some of the Comair pilots have just walked away from the profession. I have found a desk job that pay's well above starting salery at the regionals and I am home everynight and with no commuting. I have kept up my CFII and hope to keep my skills up and have something to do in retirement, maybe.
With what is happening in this industry makes you wonder why someone would even begin flight training. I have heard sense the 70"s that there is a pilot shortage right around the corner, well it never materialized. Even now it seems the Pilots might have the upper hand but I think management will have the upper hand when the new rest rules and ATP requirement comes out. They have more money to through arround to protect their interest than Alpa or the Other Unions have to toss out.
This is just my two cents from observing from my time. Just makes you wonder what the regional airline associations next play with their pilot's.
Anyway why someone choose to do something is thier personal choice, might not be what you do because your situation might be way different.
