Sigh... those guys. Even without commuters, If you have a positive space ticket, you have earned that. Stay back there. United oversells thousands of seats every hour, unless it's Christmas Eve and you are feeling nice, your generosity does not matter. they'll just catch the next bus like the other passengers. They think they're doing people a favor but they're just inconveniencing and annoying others. Yea yea, your giving up your seat to be in this closet with us for 2 hours so Susan can see her cat tonight. You just have to roll your eyes. Pet peeve...
I'm not responsible for Uniteds problems you see? They don't pay me. We're not here to run United or clean up their operations. If you're talking about charity then let's put up a tip jar by the door.

United's problems are my problems by proxy. And technically, it's a TSA problem for deadheading since they don't schedule those until midnight the night before. It's not Susan's fault who bought a ticket 2 months ago that we have to DH 2 crews on a 50 seat flight and only decided it 5 hours ago.
And you'll really appreciate it when your mom or wife is able to get on when a flight goes from 6 open seats to full because of DH crews
I do lots of charity and even when I made next to no money.

You don't know that, you don't know when or how Susan bought her ticket or if she even paid for it herself. On United, that's about less than half of their passengers. The point is, you are not making a difference unless it's a holiday or something, and ask the pilots first.
They don't care about you either. Real talk! So much of this job, the company is relying on your spirited generosity. That's not how it works, it's not our job to run the company and clean up mistakes or operational issues.

It doesn't matter if they care about me. Doesn't mean I don't care about getting them where they need to go. And believe it or not, most people appreciate a few seconds to stop and say hello instead of blowing them off like I'm sure you do
No on the contrary, I appreciate it. Unless your words start with hi I'm sitting up here. You need to still ask for permission. If you're a commuter, welcome. If you're up there for Susan's cat, then no.

Then you can expect a phone call from the chief pilot and union. Enjoy.
