AS is Frugal. While I (and most others here) don't think AZ dry lease is a business which AS wants any part of, I doubt they'd pay much penalty to get out of it early. Unless maybe the pilot shortage rears it's ugly head again. Although the basing for AZ pilots actually might be a recruiting carrot in and of itself.

It has been helpful for us. If Amazon got left high and dry without 20 planes of lift, I think there’d be lawsuits even. So it probably still has to be weighed out and done in stages.

Basing? This is what Sunny really struggles with. The schedule changes every three months. Fun fact. The company asked for more starts outta Minnie so AMZN obliged them two. Starting at 2am and 4am. lol. Three months later it all changed again anyway.
It's great job security when you work for a Sunny or HA airline. The fifth largest? Maybe not so much.

Why does everyone think Alaska managment won't want it? What has their managment said that makes people think that? Do they have the only managment team that hates top line revenue?
I'm not saying they will or they won't, but everyone seems to think they won't want it.

I too am baffled by this take. Everywhere else I've read about it (freightwaves, etc.) indicates that Alaska wants to keep it. But what do I know, am dumb pyloote.

No secret how demanding AMZN is for CMI.

Still profitable. Still doing fine on the amazon side. This is not a problem for pilots to fix.

Because I don't think it's all that profitable. The fact that Hawaiian has a B scale for the cargo side is a strong indication that they're not making very much money on it.
And Alaska has always preferred to concentrate on what they see as their core business. Expanding their world beyond Hawaii into the Pacific rim will be quite a bold step for them to take already. Some less-profitable cargo flying halfway across the country would be a distraction from that.
I doubt they will want to pay a penalty to exit early, but I can easily see them deciding not to renew the deal when it comes up.

They also said they were going to keep the JFK pilot base when they acquired Virgin America. How many Alaska pilots are JFK based now?

I highly doubt a situation where AS wants to continue that contract. Dunno that the stars will align with sunny receiving them, but we have already negotiated pay rates in the last contract so I think compared to any of the ACMI carriers, we’d be able to get it going the quickest (relatively)
As an aside, it would be awesome if those who are ignorant of what goes on in the ACMI segment of the industry would stop assuming that all ACMI carriers are the slums of the aviation world, inhabited by cretins who are incapable of understanding the business they're in well enough to negotiate a contract with an eye toward future opportunities.

But that was past management that cowarded everytime they thought about expansion. I'm not so sure Minicucci thinks the same way that past Alaska managment has thought. I get the feeling he is [almost] resentfull that past leadership didn't take full advantgage of VX and let Big 4 carriers continue to grow and expand while Alaska did [almost] nothing.
