Or during covid when UAL and management had to make agreements on raises based on if/when the company recovers from Covid. Lots of people on this forum predicting UALs demise. Lots of guys here predicting AA filing CH 11 because of there debt.
The irony speaks for itself as NK battles for its own future.

It’s nice the government erases airline debt ever so often.

I didn't type all of this to say that it makes financial sense for them to buy NK or B6, and I wouln't bet my career on it, but you'd have to be extemely naive to not think that there are serious discussions going on at DL/UAL over how to capture more of the South Florida market after one of the biggest wealthy migrations in modern history.
You can order all of the narrowbodies in the world but it's useless without gate space in the hot markets.

Oh and AA is doing just fine in MIA.
DL has given MIA to LATAM and is basically feeding them from there to points south.
UA will be the first airline to furlough in the next downturn. They have always had arrogant managers who overpromise and underdeliver and hire until the day they furlough. They are going to surpass AA in debt with this "UnitedNext" refleeting they're doing into a recession.
A friend who works at Willis Tower (Sears?) says more than half the offices are empty. It's a ghost town.

That 'cancer from Pratt' isn't a cancer at all...it's a blessing. We'd be shedding cash a lot faster if every one of our planes were flying right now.
The hiring hasn't stopped. DAL still has classes planned, UAL is accelerating theirs, and AAL still plans on ~2000 new hires next year. Anyone on the fence should get their house in order, like now. It's gonna get a lot worse here before it gets (or IF it gets) better. Hunkering down here is a very high risk solution.

Another kool aid drinking fella thinking AA gonna hire 2000 next year and actually saying UA accelerating, when they were paused for a couple of months. The slowdown post labor day is coming and it’s real. The sky is not falling, but travel is predicted to return to more historical numbers as the final sugar high covid money is finally running out. The only airline that seems to understand reality is Delta, preaching measured and realistic growth. Even they are complaining about over capacity.
like you said, sky isint falling but the slow down is rearing its head. Gogity

Let me get this straight. A judge denied the NK/JB merger because it would reduce competition and hurt "the poors" but you think they're going to allow DL or UA to buy NK?
Dream on.
