I mean it really just all changes year-by-year.
Long time ago we used to have SJD layovers, and BOG long layovers.

layover: walk off plane stand around waiting for transportation, sit in soul crushing traffic while getting car sick, or having to tell the driver to slow the hell down if there is no traffic. Get to hotel and now have to hunt down dinner and FaceTime the kids if I’m lucky

I sit in more traffic on my multi day pairings than I do doing turns and I sit in PLENTY of traffic doing turns. Walk off plane to the car, sit in traffic for a little and ask the kids about their days over dinner.

I agree. Granted everyone has their own preferences but why the hell would guys with families prefer to be out on 3 day trips vs home for dinner each night, if you live in base and close enough to the airport (assuming you can hold turns). I hate being away from the family, my bed, shower, house, versus living on the road.
I do 95% day turns by choice for the reasons you mentioned, but with two kids at home it can get tiring after awhile. For instance today I had a turn with a 1600 check-in time. In the morning I’m doing all the Dad/spouse stuff….drive kids to school, grocery run, put away the dishes. Before you know it, it’s time to get ready to work for the next 7 hours and then do it all over again the next day.
I like to get in one overnight per month if I can. Get to the hotel, check out a new city and relax for a bit with no other responsibilities.

Very true. And in some of the commuter bases at times there aren't enough long trips for the guys that want them. Really think the JCBA should include an annual base by base survey with requirements to build trip mixes close to each bases preferences. Build locals for locals and longer commutable trips in heavy commuter bases. Or the proper mix for mixed bases.

you can still be a family man, and do a multi-day pairing. They are not mutually exclusive.
