JetBlue merger
#181
As an FO I was fortunate (at one short point in my
career) to be senior enough to hold 8 hour turns. I would work M-T-W and the next week I worked M-Tues then repeat 2x. 10 days a month and 80 hours.
At a certain seniority point it makes no financial sense to do anything but day turns. Fortunately for me, I won’t need to even think of this till I’m in the ballpark of 60-62 years old.

Day trips go senior at JetBlue because it’s really your only consistent way of getting over 5 hours/day. It’s also makes every day an opportunity to fly past 1am triggering another ADG or getting extended pairing for something that happens during your turn. Something like that happens on day 1 of 3….nada.

Also getting canceled in base means you can just go home (assuming you live close) since there's usually nothing else they can do with you. If you're on day 1 of 4 then you're stuck waiting the 2+ hours at the airport for the cancelation team to reach out and inform you that you're being rescheduled to DH to LGA in two hours. I'm not saying it's like that in every instance but that is how it has always worked out for me.

[QUOTE=Flyhigh44;3685757]So , what is the latest on the merger with JetBlue? It's been real quiet.[/QUOTE
does anybody know if the US AIR/American merger or CAL/United merger went to trail or did it get settled with the DOJ prior to that?

You also have to remember, and this is purely me being selfish, but we don't really have any cool and exotic instagram worthy layovers at NK like you do at B6. Same thing goes for soft time. For instance in FLL, unless you're senior most of the multi-day pairings aren't anything to get excited over: airport hotel layover in places like ATL/BWI/MYR with 2-4 legs per day, 10 hour "3 day" with a transcon redeye back to base, etc.
There's no resort layover in PUJ or any of the vacation destinations that we fly to outside of SJU, where we recently lost our oceanfront layover hotel. Hell we don't even have international layovers anymore except for GYE, which is incredibly dangerous for everyone (even the locals).
We gave away most of our long stay layovers in contract 2018 (currently at 18 hour long stay trigger).
I'm not complaining or saying that any of this is a must have (it's work I get it), but it is a nice perk to have every so often while doing multi day trips. So considering the above, myself and many others would prefer to stick with turns.

I hear you, and it definitely makes sense for some.

It all sort of depends on the individual commuter and what airport they are commuting from. The guy who lives an almost three hour drive (counting the employee bus from the parking lot) from the airport they commute from and then must commute two hours plus on one of the four flights a day between that airport and his actual base (Thank God not me, though I know an individual who does do that) is going to have a totally different perspective from the commuter who needs 35 minutes to get to their airport which has hourly commutes to their assigned base. One guy is losing AT LEAST six hours each way and quite possibly more than that depending on scheduling and isn’t going to be much interested in turns or one day trips. The other might be inclined to pick up one days, but even for him three or four day trips woukd be more convenient.
And yeah, I know, commuting is a choice, but in my base about 65% of the pilots ARE commuters. There is no good reason we can’t have a healthy mix of trips that people can use to bid schedules that work for them with adequate reserves or premium pay to cover the people who can’t cover their trips for whatever reason, no jump seat space, COVID, weather, or whatever.
